Well I got a flat the other day and I had to get out the spare since I was on the road away from the house. Anyway I got the spare on and didn't put the flat tire back under the truck because it needed a plug.......which I did later. Anyway after all was said and done I went to put the spare back under the bed of the truck and my little attachment that fits on the end of the crank bar would not catch to crank the tire up. Kinda hard to explain, but I am guessing that I will have to replace that whole thing or just keep the spare in the bed of the truck. Anyone else have this trouble? Jeez, that little attachment that goes on the end of the crank to pull the tire back up seems like it is only 1/32 of and inch to catch........
I did not have that issue, but I had a flat at the airport on a friday, after being gone all week. Lowered the tire for the first time, and the crank would not go back up....it seems there are plastic gears inside the housing, the cable jumped off the track and totally ruined the plastic gears.... the tire has been riding in the box ever since.
I guess i was lucky. I had a flat couple of months ago. I did notice that "key" that goes on the end of the crank rod did seem that rugged, and the whole thing together felt flimsy, but the tire lowered just fine, and i rewound the cable back up. When I got the tired fixed, I lowered the cable and the spare went back up ok too. Hearing both your problems with it, I'll sure be real careful in the future though.
More problems with this stupid thing then anything else. Gosh sorry but i have to let a little steam off - Ford, great job engineering a safety system you idiots for maybe a $200 spare. BTW - Can i have a factory installed alarm on my $45k truck? Guess not, but keep my spare tire safe. You will probably have to go to the stealership to get a new mechanism. They do sell em, I would check parts yards and craigslist first. Goodluck
