Ok I'll post this here first ,let me know if I should post it else were, ( bla bla bal) I am running 315/75/16 BFG Mudders on my truck ,My question is (yes it is stupid) were should / could I mount a spare tire? I still have the OE spare hanging under the truck, and I dont want to get a flat and grenade my rear end by putting on the stock spare.
I know that I can toss a spare in the bed, but I use my truck for work and to haul my quads. I was thinking of a full size Bronco spare tire holder. Any tips or trick s?
i just don't carry one! you could strap it to the hood like landrovers do or mount it upright on one of the bedrails. i have an x-tended cab so i used to put it behind my front seat (before i went to 39's). the bronco tailgate idea is interesting, i think that would work really well.
Thats funny Jason !! I thought a bout going the Landrover route too. butThethought of 1) hoisting up a 35"tire on to the hood
2) hoisting it off the hood
3) and having to look over the tire on the hood
plus the fact that with my luck A) the tire would crush my hood and B)fly off my hood
made me re think it.
I 'll let you know if the Bronco idea works out

thanks man .....keep me posted! i guess a 35" tire would cause some visibility problems. you could mount a roof rack and strap it to the top of the cab!
ya trying rolling a 39" tire with steel wheels! heavy SOB. If i have to put them in the bed for some reason i literally have to crawl them up there....just like i was rockcrawlin, lol.
Why would running a smaller spare cause damage to your axle? Do you have a locker in the axle? If the spider gears are still there and are working properly, the smaller spare will work fine.
NOTE--I dont run a smaller spare and think that if you need something to get you off a trail, you need a full size.
What about a reciever hitch-mounted tire carrier? The hitch is plenty strong to hold the big tire. The Bronco tire rack that bolts to the body may not be that great for a 35" tire. The hitch mounted carrier could be made to swing down out of the way of the tailgate too.
Another idea...you could build or buy one of those bed cages....you could just throw the spare on top of the cage leaving the bed empty for your other stuff. Plus you'd have room up there for whatever else you were hauling.

Get a tool box and have a mount installed to where you will have the tire on an angle not quite standing straight up.
It is kind of red neck, but cheap. What I noticed a few people do is drill a hole in the front of the bed, slide a bolt between the cab and bed, bolt it to the bed, and then use the rest of the bolt sticking out as a stud and attach the tire to the front of the bed. That way it only takes up a bit of your bed. If you want to be able to slide something all the way forward, you could use two bolts with a plate under the heads on the outside wall to lift the tire off the bed floor.
The only thing I would note is that it is better to mount it behind the driver. If you mount it on the pass. side it creates a big blind spot when backing up or checking over your shoulder. Does not matter too much on the left side because you can always lean out the window or turn to the left and look over the curve of the tire.

you could also get a front hitch and mount it up there. that would look pretty cool, as long at air can still flow into the engine. i think the bronco tailgate idea is the best option. you can probably get one for pretty cheap at a junk yard.
i saw one of those hitch mounted tire carriers in a jeep catolog (I know, I know) they are fairly cheap and look like they would woork well. i couln't find one that would swing down though, at that would be a good idea. the one i saw would just slide in the recever and lock with the pin. i have been trying to deside where to put my tire for ever now, and just now finally mounted my highlift jack. good luck

thanks for all the tips !!! I like the cage and the tool box ideas. The hitch would work if I wasn't pulling a trailer . I priced out a bronco carrier at 100.00 I'll let you all know if it works THANKS !!!!
Wow! very impresive.I like how it swings out of the way. Yea Texan the lack of a welder can hinder your build,but if you drawn up the plans take them to your local high school metal shop and see if they can "home work "it for you.
