240 or 300?

I have just boght a '68 flairside and I bought it from the original owners grandson who said the engine was a 300. The truck is all original exept for a repaint a couple years ago and nothing else appears to have been changed. But I ran into a problem when I checked the VIN and it came back a 240. I know the 240 and 300 are very similar but are there any obvious diffrences? I know where the serial # is on a 300 is it the same on a 240?

Thanks for the Info.

The only real way to tell the difference is the stroke.
The 240 has 3.18" and the 300 has a 3.98" stroke.

In the 240 the combustion chambers are smaller and most have 2 grove pulleys. The heads are also a bit different. Has a water temp. probe hole

In the 300 there is no water temp. probe hole. Typically the dipstick hole is in front of the distributor, unless it's 4x4. Most have 3 grove pulleys. I've got pictures of my 300 if your interested in taking a peak.

Dang. Mine looks exactly the same as the pictures! The only diffrence I see is my air cleaner is diffrent and points a diffrent direction. On my truck, the serial number is about 8 in away from the starter. Does that indicate anything I know thats where it is on the 300 is it there on the 240 as well?

I'm not sure if the serial number placement is any different on the 240s. If the truck is all original then it's very likely to be the 240, not the 300.
I think the dipstick location may be different in the 240s, again not positive.

It is original ao I am guessing it's a 240 but it does fell real torquey like a 300 but nothing really appears to be touched in the engine bay so I am 99.9 % it's a 240.
Thanks for the info.

Finally figured out what it has in it. It is a 300 of unknown year most likely a 1975.

Just curious, how did you figure out your '68 has a '75 implant?

1. The casting number came back as a 300 I6
2. The casting number matched 1968-1975
3. I think it is a '75 because it looked the same as one in a buddy's truck but it could be any of those years.

I can't find the site I used for the numbers, but I'll post it when I do.

The 240's are a torquey as motor as well, have a higher comp ratio. If you do have a 240 take a 300, throw the head on, and juice up the cam and you will have a stout *** 300

Define torquey. The 4-inch deep ruts I have in my lawn know are my definition of torquey!
