Hello every one. Ive got a steering problem. I have a 1992 F-250 with the 460 and a 5 speed. Its a four wheel drive with 160 thousand miles on it. The steering pump keeps giveing out on it. I wonder if its because of the tires and the four wheel drive? It has 265/75R 16 Timberline MTs(which arent much bigger than stock)but the truck has gone through three pumps in the last year. Is there some aftermarket pump or a stronger pump I can get. How about hydraulic assist. Some day Id like to get a 38 or 40 inch tire on it but ive got to get this steering problem fixed. Thanks for your help.
Dead pumps generally tell me the steering gearbox and/or lines are full of crud, and that crud is being circulated throughout the system under high pressure. Crud in such a system acts as an abrasive, much like highly pressurized sand in a sand-blasting system in a sense...
Anyway, I'd recommend you flush everything out... by removing the gearbox, taking the cover off, and cleaning it out manually. Replace the lines and such as well.
When you take the gearbox apart, mark the input shaft and the pitman arm shaft which a sharpie or chalk on the shaft and the box, so if things come apart a little too far (i.e. pieces rolling around your workbench) you can reassemble it and get the "clocking" as it is now. Otherwise you'll be miserable trying to align the truck and get the steering wheel straight - I learned this the hard way - I forgot to mark mine and had to get it right through trial and error - not fun.
Thanks. Ill clean everything. You said to replace the hoses right. I know this probably sounds stupid but is there any way to clean the existing hoses?
