Oil Specs

Hey Guys and GAls,

I have a friend that wants me to change her oil. She just bought a 1999 Ford F-350 Super Duty Dually, 7.3L Turbo Diesel... 280,000 miles. Can anyone suggest an oil type and grade???

Thanks..

15w-30 for the good old fashioned stuff. Rotella T is popular, as well as Delo for the common off the shelf stuff. It should be CJ-4 rated or better, but all the big name brands are. You'll need 15 qts for the change and it's easier if you poke a hole in the bottom of the filter to drain the oil out of it first. That way it doesn't accidentally slip out of your hands and make a big mess. It's also a good idea to dump a quart or so of oil in the filter before you install the new one since the fuel injectors are fired off the engine oil.

Welcome to FTE. Let us know if you have any other questions. You can also look a little further down the list and you'll find the 99 - 03 7.3 diesel sections located here 1999 - 2003 7.3L Power Stroke Diesel - Ford Truck Enthusiasts Forums

I used 15w-40 Valvoline Premium Blue or 15w-40 Mobil Delvac 1300

Both are good oils, that meet the specs for use in the 7.3l

Definitely poke the hole in the filter prior to removal to allow it to drain.

I agree with others on this one. It is messy job. Just don't get a off brand oil to do the job. Have the friend buy lunch and let the oil drain completely.

i use Amsoil Series 3000 heavy duty diesel oil 5w-30 it was recommended to me by a ford mechanic who installed a Banks power system for me 4 years ago.it is a little expensive but if you also buy there oil filter you can go up to 25000 miles between changes.i was so happy with the oil i became a part time independent dealer.I can ship anywhere and give good prices.
