Hi all. I am a FTE virgin and referred by a long time FTE man. I just bought my 7th dually (3rd Ford, 1st 7.3) a '99 diesel extended cab 4x4 auto. It has poor power and got only 8 mpg on the highway towing an 8,000lb enclosed car trailer to Daytona. I just had a friend pull the codes yesterday. 1280 ICP circuit out of range (low), 1247 Turbo boost low, and 0500 speed reference sensor (speedo doesn't work sometimes, then pops back up while driving). I would rather not spend endless money on it although a couple sensors aren't too bad. Can anyone give me some good advice?
the speedo code I would check the sensor in the top of the rear diff and wiring. The under power and low boost code, have you checked for boost leaks or exhaust leaks (like the up pipes). Let me check on the 1280 code and ill be back with you unless someone else chimes in.
I believe that the speedometer problem is the VSS sensor and it is located on the differential (I remember it to be on the upper passenger side)...took 10 minutes at most to do. I got the sensor at NAPA.
the sensor that is most apt to affect the speedometer is on the transmission or transrer case
as far as hearing a boost leak with the engine running,I doubt it,the best way to find one is build a leak detector
I bought a used Edge EZ off ebay and threw it on but got little if no improvement. That is when I went and pulled the codes. There is Soot/oil/grease whatever around the silicone boots on the turbo pipes, I assume up-pipes is the right term? The Edge EZ only plugs into the ICP, the Edge plug seems to be a tighter fit than the factory connector when it is plugged in. We ran codes, removed the EX, cleared and ran codes again and got the same 1280 and 1247. I will also check the speed sensor on the diff.
The oil around the boots of the IC pipes, which is what I think your looking at, is normal. They can be cleaned, but if they are still on the pipes, thats not your big problem. The up-pipes that are being spoke of are behind the turbo, coming up from the exaust manifolds. If you can see soot back there, you have an exaust leak, and are losing power and economy. If those are leaking, you will need to fix that, and soon. I would recommend using International's bellowed up-pipes so that you don't have to do this extremely entertaining job ever again. More expensive, but worth it in my opinion.
Those pipes with the grease, oil and dirt are the intercooler pipes and that will cause a boost leak. It would be beneficial to pull those off and clean them up a bit with some brake clean. The up pipes are the exhaust pipes from the manifolds to the turbo. I think the 1280 code may just be from the edge ez you could unhook that and run a self test and see if the code still comes up.
My mechanic found my exhaust manifold leaking. I usually only smelled the exhaust leak when the engine was cold. There was soot on the head. Inspect your engine and engine compartment for soot. That will lead you to any leaks.
