Could some of you experts help me out. I don't have any experience dealing with salvage yards. Could you guys give me a ball park idea of what prices to expect to pay for a couple items I need for my 55 Panel. It has no engine/trans in it right now. (bought it that way quite a few years ago) What is a fair price for a small block V8 (302 or 351W) with an auto trans. Also for a bench seat or pair of buckets in good condition? I just want a reliable driver, nothing high performance. Does it matter whether it comes out of a car or a truck? Would think cars are more plentiful.
I just want something that will start and run well to cruise around town once and awhile. I really want to try to get this vehicle on the road this summer.
Don't mind paying a fair price, just don't have any idea what is fair. Don't want to get ripped off either.
Hi and welcome Jeff, great to have you on board.
Prices vary alot but usually $5-700 for a used SBF/C4 depending on condition is the norm around here. I have no idea when it comes to panel seats.
I've had better luck lately with Craigslist than wrecking yards. I just picked up a running 200 for my Econoline for $150 and a recently rebuilt FE C-6 for the 55 for $200.
I been getting stuff off Craigs list too.
The wrecking yards here only go back about 20 years and its scrapped out.
You might even get abetter deal on a running junk car off craigs list. Strip it and sell the rest for scrap.
Ditto's what's been said about craigs List..might find a keeper thats been wrecked,vandalized..but with eng/trans in good shape.
Salvage yards around this area sell won't cut deals like they used to, mustang,Crown Vic,T-bird , Bonco,F 150's and a few others are good candidates.Good Luck!
Welcome Jeff, When I needed a C4 Trans for my truck, I kept my eyes open for a junk car someone was selling around my area. I found an 81 Fairmont, which I bargained down to 300.00. Just so happens it had a C4 with a straight 6. The car itself inside and out was pitiful, but the trans was in great shape. I also stripped anything else I thought I might want off it, and my son in law took that straight 6 which also ran pretty smooth for his project. I just happen to luck out with that Fairmont because it was built with either the C4 or C6. You might also luck out and find a old LTD, I put a 289 out of a mustang in my truck. Good luck.
Unfortunately, with high scrap prices, the junkyards are crushing and selling at a rapid pace. City and county ordinances are getting more stringent and the clunker laws are being enforced. Gotta crush the old stuff to make room for the new stuff. IMO, you'll have better luck scouring Craigslist. just about everything can be found. (Except the elusive 430 MEL)
1958 430 cid Mercury Edsel Lincoln motor was similar to the FE in design, and had an advertised hp rating of 400 and about 500 ft. lb. torque. The Super Marauder version used 3 2bbl carbs. It had more power than anything in the day, and was reduced in power by 1959. My bud's father-in-law had one that he stuffed in a 1947 Ford pickup, and smoked all the 57 Chev's at the stoplights back in the day. I want one, but talk about expensive!!
try Car-Part.com--Used Auto Parts Market
do a search on whatever parts you want, condition and prices will come up to use as a guide or you might end up buying (got my Toyota steering box this way).
Ditto...Craigslist, AutoTrader (mag), seems to be fairly good pickin's
around here (Detroit-Toledo) with hoopde-rust-rides as far as
V-8 T-Bird, Cougar, and light-duty F-Series trucks go...good time of
year to pick that stuff up...
Sometimes ya can also score motor-transmission-rear end out of the whole
vehicle for a few hundred bucks...keep a phone handy & some cash ready!
