timing chain ?
o.k. I know ford retarted the timing in the early 70's. I have a 74 block i'm getting ready to rebuild. my question is can you buy a timing set for a 69 and do away with the retarted timing problem.

Well, sure! Several aftermarket vendors make double roller sets with an oversize index pin hole and these cute little offset cams to change the cam retard/advance. Check around a Summit or P.A.W. catalog. If you go this route, I would get a degree wheel and degree it in when you install. Probably not wise to blindly guess which cam to use, as there are some variances in manufacturing tolerances.

Reread your post and realized that I missed the point of your question. I doubt it. I think (may be wrong) that the replacement sets are all retarded to eliminate a part number. Have your local parts counter guy look up a '74 and a '69 to find out for sure. Otherwise, see above.

Dynagear makes 2 different kinds of Ford replacement sets, one has the factory retard, the other is strait up, and both are priced the same, but check the catalogue, and make sure the saleman gets you the one that is stait up.
