jegs has a VDO pyrometer for $99 with 12" probe (black with white numbers and a red neddle). Watch when purchasing online to make sure you get the probe/sending unit with the guage. many times are listed separately.

When the EGT starts getting high you just back out of the throttle a little or drop a gear so the RPM comes up but you are using less throttle.

I just got my 7.3 idi and been reading up all I can on them. Now from what im reading here the you play safe and adjust the screw clockwise 1/8 turns at a time? and check your pyro gauge to see heat output. Now by doing this im assuming you are increasing the amount fuel into the cylinder? correct a newby if Im wrong but isnt this counter productive to mpg? are there really big gains here? and has anyone ever dyno tested this or is this seat of the pants. Another funny thing here to me never having diesel but pretty handy with the gassers racing and such. when you lean out a gas engine temps go up richer is cooler. So you guys are saying richer makes hotter with Diesel? These might sound like dumb questions but I just got to ask. thanks

Richer does make diesels hotter there is no such thing as a lean diesel. They suck in as much air as they can at any givin RPM not including boost and rpm is controlled by the amount of fuel being injected more fule = more BTUs. The biggest thing that helped me understand how diesels differ from gass is THER IS NO VACCUME IN A DIESEL!! yes I know at times there is a vaccume in the intake but vacume doesn't draw air into the cylindes for all intensive purposes. It is forced in by atmosphieric presure or boost presure.

yest turning up the fule is counterproductive to MPG. Any black smoke is partialy burnt fule meaning there is more fule intering the cylinder than can be burnt. Don't know if any one has dynoed it but people can pull a load up a hill more easily with it as long as they didn't tweak it too far.
