lubricating a slideout

Any thoughts?

Greywolf seems to be the expert on these sort of things. There is a full thread on slideout maintainence in the first thread in the towing section. I have read every thread in length and earned some very valuable knowledge. Give yourself some time and read them all. And if you dont, yes, you have to lubricate the slide often. Last thing you want is for rust to sieze the bugger on a sunday when you packing up to head home.

The current plan is to just use spray on white lithium grease and lube the track /gear mechanisim. I understand not getting any on the bottom of the unit due to transfer to the carpets inside, but I am stil unclear on everything that I should be lubricating. Additionally, how do you lubricate the jack stands in the front?

Do not use grease on your slide outs. You will make more of a mess than what it is worth.
If you do use white lithium grease do not use allot. Because you run the risk of having to much and the gears could jump then your slide could go in or out uneven and then won't seal properly...

I have been in RV service for about 4 years now and we were actually told not to grease the slide outs...

If I am not to use grease, then what do I use on them? It sounds like it is lugging a little going in and out. I would like to head off any major issues so I do not get little suprises on a trip.

You might consider having it checked out also. If its not timed correctly or something is bent/binding you'll want to get that corrected asap. I just traded out of a camper that had chronic slide issues so its something that I'm hypersensitive to now.

Good luck with it!!!

I agre with squarebody, if you use grease or a heavy lubricant you will create a dust magnet and make matters worse. If you a light lubricant and in sparing amounts you can effectivly lubricate your slide gear and track. Problem is, you will have to check and re-lubricate more frequently.

Use "Slide-Out Lube"...which is specific for your needs. They even make slide-out rubber seal lube to help keep the seals from cracking.

Here is an excellent link...and place to purchase if you choose.

RVWholesalers.com , Chemicals , Lubes , Slide-Out Dry Lube Protectant

RVWholesalers.com , Chemicals , Lubes

RVWholesalers.com , Chemicals , Lubes , Slide-Out Rubber Seal Treatment

They have a GREAT selection...and I have always received great service from them.

Good luck...

Any dry-lubricant should suffice. Just so long as you are not leaving any oily residue for dirt to attract to.
