Removing Pistons without pulling the engine?
I have a broken piston on my 99 5.4L Expedition. I am having the Cylinder Head machined right now and about to remove the piston. I hope I don't have any cracks on the cylinder. I have never done this before and the Haynes manuel I have is not detailed in removing them without the engined pulled. Anybody got any great advice other than spending thousands at a shop? I can get my hands on most all of the specialty tools just need some talk through.

the process would be the same with it pulled or not, it's just a lot harder when it's still in the engine bay as you don't have room to work. That is assuming you can even get the oil pan off with it still in there.

I think it would be easier to pull the rest of the engine. You've got to remove the engine mounts anyway. Plus, like Pitrow said, you have limited working room. You'll find it alot easier to do all the cleaning and alignining the new gaskets with the engine out. I'm just finishing up replacing my head gaskets and I think I could have cut the time in half had I pulled the engine to begin with.
