I asked about this before , but now that I've had the truck for a few months my previous ideas may have been wrong. I have a '69 ford with an unknown year 460 in it. When cold and when going down the road the oil pressure stays at between the I and L on the guage. When I get off the highway close to work (19 miles of interstate ) If the light is red at the bottom of the off ramp the oil pressure will drop to nothing, as soon as I get going it goes back up. When I get to work about 1/2 mile off of interstate and park it does the same thing. If I let it idle and pop the hood I can hear no funny noises of any kind. If the oil pressure was really that low wouldn't I be hearing some valve chatter at least? Truck runs great barely gets past the cold mark on temp guage on the interstate although I question that too because the heater works very well. Should I be worried about the oil pressure? Thanks alot, Mike
It all gets back to the same old thing; do you know for sure that the oil pressure is dropping? Eighty percent of low oil pressure problems in the 460 is the gauge. Either the sending unit on the engine or the dash gauge itself. Ford has this little regulator for the gauges on the dash panel in a lot of models that starts crapping out when it gets warm. That is why most people ask the question as to what type of gauge do you have. If it is not mechanical then you probably have a gauge problem and not oil pressure problem.
This may be a stupid question but by a mechanical guage do you mean the type that has the tubeing running from the motor to the guage? If so I assume the instrutions would tell me how and where to hook it up on the engine. Thanks for all your help. Mike
the oil press on my 460 comes off the block just behind the intake and it uses an 1/8 inch tube to the back of the gauge, use a copper tube, some come with plastic and a little heat or wear ya have a leak, they hook up with simple compression fitins
no question having to do with tech is stupid. yes, thats the mechanical guage. its more accurate because the pressure is sent through the tube directly to the guage. there are no sending units or anything like that.
I agree, try the mechanical oil pressure gauge first. If it still happens there is a chance that your main bearings are going bad and the pressure is bleeding out. This was the same problem i had, uncle of mine who's been a mechanic for 35 years told me to dump a bottle of lucas in and if it went away for awhile and came back that it was the problem. Another problem i've heard about on older 460 blocks is problems with hair line cracks in the lifter valley bleeding out pressure.
ok, well I got a question...what is the normal pressure? Between what and what at idleing, and on the freeway??
I got a '79 f150 4x4 with a '79 460 block and '73 heads...when its cold, i mean for the first 10 to maybe 15 minutes its between 65 and 80 psi. (yes i have a mechanical guage)
then when it warms up, it goes way down, unless iam somewhat on the gas going about 25+mph
at idle its right at 20psi. 25 psi some days...
is that normal? i mean it seems kinda low..iam running 15-40 weight oil.
thanks guys
Vehicles are like women, no two are the same. I run 10-40 in mine and it never gets below 40psi at idle even after a hard day of pulling in hot weather. But that doesn't mean anything is wrong with yours. As long as you have oil pressure it should be ok. It might be possible that the relief spring in the pump might be getting weak and starts losing tension as it warms up. I would think that if the bearings were worn that the oil pressure would be low at start up. Metal usually expands when it gets hot and you would think the tolerances would get tighter as the engine warms up. If you are not hearing any knocking or other noises I wouldn't worry about it
