My dad just bought a 97 F250 7.3 with 168k. The fuel filter light was on so he got a new filter, replaced it but the light is still on. Do not have either manual is there something that we need to do to get this light to go off or should it have gone off by its self? Also any general good to knows about this motor? Thanks Larry
thats a different light i beleive, cant remember but i though we have 2 filter lights? a water in fuel light, and a filter restriction light. could be wrong, its been a long day......
My "water in fuel" light comes on about every other startup. Goes off after driving a few hundred feet. I have changed the filter and drained the bowl.
On the driver's side of the filter there are two (2) plugs near the bottom. The bottom one is for the fuel heater and the one just above that is the water in fuel sensor.

Roger, you just taught me something. I for some damn reason was under the impression that the restriction sensor was also the water in fuel sensor........... I just rebuilt my fuel bowl last week and it never occured to me that the big round thingy in the side of bowl was a sensor...........Learn something new every day!!!!

Not trying to be a smart aleck but are you pretty sure about that? The one that has the brass stand-out screw with the rubber-coated slip on terminal is for the water in fuel sensor and the bigger rubber odd-shaped one is for the heater element. I was thinking that the heater element was on top and the water in fuel was on the bottom.
