Check Engine Light is on.......

and was wondering if anyone might be able to tell me what the might be. I don't have a code reader and I would like to fix it myself if I can. This is the second time it has come on. The first time I cleaned the MAF and disconnected the neg post on the battery to reset the computer.

It came on again today and gas consumption went up and it didn't seem to have the power it should.

Could it be the O2 sensor? If so where are the sensors located and can I do this at home?

FYI. It's an 05 F250 CC V10. Thanks.

First off...it is a MUST to have the code read. If you do not have a reader, then go to an AutoZone, Checker, etc. and they will read it for FREE.

It is impossible to guess at the problem. O2 sensor's usually last 100k or more...unless a bad connection.

Sorry...the code needs to be read. Once you get the code...come back and we should be able to help.

OBTW: To change out an O2 sensor is really NO big deal. You can even rent the O2 sensor socket from mentioned parts stores for FREE. The O2 sensors are on the exhaust pipe (1 each before the CAT since you have a '05 V10 3v).

TIP: Stick with Motorcraft O2 sensors...if possible. They just seem to work better with the V10.

Good luck...

It could be the O2 sensors. It could be the throttle position sensor. It could be a temp sensor. It could be a purge solenoid. It could be the MAF again. It could be about a hundred other things, too.

If you don't have the code read just start replacing everything on the truck until the light goes out. It will cost FAR less to read the code and know where to start looking.

As has been stated, go to your local auto parts store where they will pull the codes for you for free, and that gives you a place to start.

Once the codes have been pulled, the hard part is deciphering what exactly is wrong. The code gives a failure, but doesn't tell you what part is broken causing that failure. Example, let's say someone told you "My car won't start." Then the question is, is the battery dead, fuel pump dead, computer dead, ignition switch dead... you see where this goes. That is what the check engine light does, it just tells you what the failure is, not what part has actually failed.

Right now, I am dealing with a code on my truck that points to the O2 sensors. Changed both sensors, reset the code, it came right back. So obviously the problem isn't the O2 sensors.

Pull the codes, get back to us and we can give you a place to go from there.

OK Guys. Just got back from the local parts store and they read the codes for me and this is what I got. Code P0506. Something to do with the IAC. Of course they did'nt have one so it looks as though I will have to do the dealer thing.

I'm open for suggestions now!

Buy a Haynes repair manual $18.00 and look up the code and how to replace the part. Stay away from the stealership unless you need to lighten your wallet.

DTC# P0506 = Idle control system, rpm lower than expected.

I would pull off the IAC and give it a good cleaning and see if that solves your problem.

I got the DTC out of my Haynes Manual.......It is a valuable tool.

Can't clean the IAC, it don't have one!! I went to the local Ford dealer today and purchased a new TPS for a cool $84.00. Got home and was going to replace it, couldn't get the electrical plug to it removed. It unlocked, but I couldn't get it pulled off, could not figure out why! I had one small torx bit to remove the two screws and I dropped it into the center under the intake manifold. By this time I'm rather P.O.ed and thoroughly disgusted with the whole deal, so I slammed the hood shut and went inside the house. Maybe tomorrow will be a better day!!

Isn't that what FTE and the internet is for??? Don't waist your money on paper manuals...when we are here to help.

Plus...if you GOOGLE Code P0506...you'll get about 4k responses.

Just my .02

A manual is not a waste of money. Its nice to have a written refernce with pics alot of times. If it weren't for manuals how would the people here on FTE get the info to post answers to questions. Just guess?

Hay bama210,
Did you get it fixed? I also have a 05 V10 that has flashed that code twice. Hope you got it worked out.
