Hi gang. I have an f350 with a 351w. It has 200k on it and is a bit tired. I have looked into rebuilds and stroker kits and such(this list has been invaluable). I came across a guy with a 351m converted to a 400 with a transmission with 20,000 on a rebuild. I can't decide if I want to swap my 351 for the 400 or not. I can get the new engine for a couple hundred bucks. A rebuilt would be at least $1500. But I'm concerned about finding(performance) parts for the 400. I'm assuming I would have to changed engine mounts as well. It seems the aftermarket has lots of parts for the Windsor but nada for a 400. Any input is appreciated.
John
Personally, I'd stick with the 351W or go with a 460. You didn't mention what year your truck was, but I've got to assume the 400 wasn't offered in it from the factory. I'm not knocking the potential of a built 400, and a couple of hundred sounds like a good deal, but the 351W is a lot more popular, meaning there are many more aftermarket performance parts available for it for less money.
My experince with the 351w is they are very dependable and fair on gas. The 351m and400m is a good engine when it is runing but stays broke or running poorly most of the time. I am sure that there will be others who will disagree. I would never use a 351/400m unless I had to.
351M/400 V8 performance parts are out there. Intakes are available from Edelbrock and Weiand. The engine is basically a raised deck 351-2V Cleveland with bigger mains and longer rods so cams for the Cleveland work. The lifters, rocker arms, valve springs and valves from the 429/460 will work too.
