351c or 400

I recently bought a 1979 F100 that originally had a 302 motor, the previous owner said it currently has a 351c and AOD trans from a 71 Galaxy, to my knowledge the only 335 series offered in a 71 was a 400 so I'm trying to decipher if I have a 351c or 400 in the truck. I have a 393W roller motor I'm wanting to put in this truck with a built C-6 but if I do indeed have a 351c instead of a 400 I might be interested in rebuilding it instead, I've been researching and looking for casting numbers and the first one I found is on the intake D1AE-9426-AD, I've looked it up to no avail! Could anyone help me on what intake that is that would be appreciated! Thanks!

The 351C were only built from '70-'74 and only were available in cars. No truck EVER had a Cleveland in it from the factory.

The intake you have is a '71, car engine. I don't have the where-with-all at the moment to check the numbers. Valve cover bolts = 8 = 351C, 351M/400.

One major difference between the 'C' and M block is the bell housing....the C will have a smaller bolt/housing pattern while the M Block will have the 429/460 pattern.

Also, look for a 3" long, 0.75" wide and 1" high casting on the front of the engine to the right of the distributor. M Blocks (not all but most) have it while the C engines will not.

Look on the top corners of the heads, too. Clevelands will have a #2 or #4 bossed on the corners - 2v or 4v - while the M blocks will have an 'M' or nothing.

Yeah I'm familiar with the production dates of the 351c and that it never came in a truck my truck originally came with a 302, it either has a 400 or a 351c in it now, I know the intake casting D1AE is a from a 71 full size car, the heads have a 2 cast in them and there is no rib on the right of the distributor, I can't crawl up far enough to get a block casting id, and I think it's a 400 engine, the trans pan says Ford automatic on it, I just want to make sure before I replace it with my 393w

At the very least, you have Cleveland 2v heads! Which means a Cleveland 2v intake.

Pretty sure the block is a C, too....from your description. I know C heads have been put on an M block....but why do that and install a 2v car intake?

Silly me....some '71 Galaxies did have Clevelands....I know that for a fact. Seen 'em in person.

Thanks for the reply I got to do some more digging on this motor to ID it, I'm a fan of the 400 but my aluminum headed and intake roller block 393w will be a screamer and lighter than the 400 but if I do have a 351c I might build that for the sake of building a 351c I just got the truck so tomorrow I'm gonna look it over some more

I had the last two letters switched it's DA not AD and that casting number matches 351c 2v intakes I've seen for sale on the Internet so after reading and more reading I think it's a 351c, I'm just gonna have to pull the starter off and crawl up in there to get a block ID before I even think about pulling the motor to get the block checked out so I can either order parts for a 351c or just use my 393w

As you probably know, a C intake will not fit a 351/400m block without spacers....which I'm betting there are none.

Also, look for the rib behind the distributor. The 351/400m block extends all the way to the front if the block.

You more than likely have a C block.

I identified the transmission as a AOD out of a 80-86 truck by the trans pan that says Automatic Overdrive Metric so I hope that's right which means I have a 351c due to the small bell housing transmission. So now I either yank the engine to positive ID the block and if it is a 351c buy Edelbrock rpm air gap intake and rpm II aluminum heads, roller cam and get this motor rebuilt or I continue finishing my 393w and and go with that! Ahh! I can't make my mind up!
