I am in the process of fixing some fuel leaks( transfer pump, regulator, fuel lines) and have noticed that there is a large diaphram type deal attached to the high pressure side of the fuel transfer pump. I talked to the guys at Ford and one of the parts guys said it was a fuel accumulator and that it only was used on the California emissions trucks with split shot injection systems. My question is do I need to have this, since the 49 state trucks didn't use it. As far as I can tell mine is leaking and to remove my fuel pump, I have to pull the turbo since this thing is attached under the turbo pedestal. If anyone has any experience with CA trucks please let me know.
Ouch, you have a cali truck. There are a few guys on here that are very familar with that fuel pump with the star ship (fuel damper) on the back of it. I'm sure they will chimp in here pretty soon.
However, you do have have different injectors (split shot compared to the regular single shot).
Justin:
You do indeed have a Cali truck and that in it's self is not all that bad unless you are going to change the fuel pump. The "Starship Enterprise" that sits on top of your pump is a dampener against the pulsating fuel pressures.
You do have split shot injectors which again is not all bad as they squirt 120cc's where as the other 49 states just dribble in comparison.
I really don't know what you would experience if you were to just remove it and plug the hole. My next question would be: why would you want to do this? If you wanted to eliminate the Cali pump completely that would entail a different "Y" tubing from the pump the the heads and that is where my expertise ends.
I'm sure that other Cali owners will chime in to give their view.
I don't necessarily want to remove it I am just thinking one less place to have leaks. Don't get me wrong, I love the performance of my truck. I was just inquiring as to whether or not it was necessary to run the split shot injectors.
Kawa, I just noticed that you live in Auburn. I grew up in Northern California, in Santa Rosa. I also have lots of family in the greater Sacramento area. Small world isn't it.

It certainly is especially when you get hooked up to a forum like this then you really find out how small it is.
You can change and many have but to change just for the fact that they are splits and you want something else will be very expensive. the cost of the injectors, $1K give or take plus a chip to over ride the computer as it is programed for the splits.
The only "Extra" spot that would/could produce a leak is where the "Star Ship"
dampener screws into the top of the pump.(I do not know of this happening.) Other than that I think everything else is pretty standard.
The ATS Trans is a vast improvement over the factory trans with a banks trans- command module. The ATS TripleLok torque converter controller and torque converter took some getting used to. That is getting it set to lock up the converter where I liked it. All in all it drives like an Allison since the converter is locked-up at around 20-25 mph and doesn't unlock until 20-25. I have got friends with Duramax's with Allisons and they have said the ATS set up feels like a beefed up Allison. It was really weird the first drive with the new Trans setup since you end up with Five firm shifts. The intercooler from ATS probably isn't as effective as some of the other units, but because of the smaller tubing and cooler ti allows you to maintain the higher boost pressures, I believe because you need a lesser volume of compressed air to push through the IC. I love my Banks Chip, got it through a friend with connections at Banks, no idea what it is, accept that it blows no black smoke, gets 22 mpg on the interstate @65mph, and stomps on alot of other tweeked trucks. I tow in excess of 15,000lbs regularly with 3.55 gears and don't have any trans or egt problems. Hope that helps. Justin
