Towing ?s and Issues

1995 F-250 7.3, I just pulled my race traler maybe 7800# loaded, to Vegas from San Diego about 350 miles. When towing in 3rd gear up a grade at about 3200 rpms the truck bucked a couple of times towing below 3200 was fine. After a couple of bucks the check engine light flashed so I quickly droped the rpm and all was fine. I could not use fourth gear on the grade as it would bog way done. Any thoughts on this?

I have but have not yet installed a Superchips power chip it is a single unit that you plug into the trucks CPU, is this any good for towing?

thx diego

The superchip will give you more power but at the very least you need a pyrometer put in before you use it.

DP-tuner or Tony wildman will give much better power than the chip you have. Same with pyro for them as well. Also recommended are an intake (Stock leaks dirt!) and a new turbo down pipe (stocker is smashed flat!)

Also you should get the truck scanned to see what the CEL was set for. Come back here with the code P**** and we can help figure out if there is something wrong.

I use the superchips 1705 on safe tow mode. I had a real 'bucking' problem at high RPM's but not any more since I put in Beans tranny savers injectors. To be honest and maybe someone will straighten me out on this. Put it simple, what is the major difference between the tuner and the chip??? Glenn PS, every once in awhile you have to show your ignorance!

FWIW- i have an auto with superchip set on High Performance, and was on high-performance even before my gauges. she never gets outta hand on the EGTs even pulling a BIG hill at 3300 rpms in drive running 65-70 with 20,000+ pounds behind me. yes, under a big load on a big hill i smack 3300 rpms in the face, and so far it hasnt smacked back.

Well this particular time 3200 rpms got me about 45 mph going up that hill. I guess I could have shifted into 2nd and chuged along at 30 mph. So what are the max rpm ranges for each gear? On the tach 3200 is still below red?

I run with my SC 1705 on high perf all the time. Haven't taken it off for at least 2 years. Before I got the stage 1's the highest I ever saw was 1230 on a long pull with a smallish(for our trucks) trailer at 90 on I-90. Now I can get 1250 at the drop of a hat empty if I really want to. Time for a downpipe and h2o injection.

Max engine governed rpm by the PCM is 3,000 to 3,400 depending on engine load and PCM code. 3,600 is the not to exceed rpm (down shift).
Also you can have a out of cal tach.
