I have a 2000 F-350 with 40,000 mi on a rebuilt engine, 4" exhaust, afe intake, edge programer, ect... at start up I have a huge ammount of white/bluish smoke from the tail pipe, more white than blue, replaced GPR and glowplugs with no evail. as soon as I drive it around the white smoke is gone only black if I WOT it. but when I come to an idle in about 30 seconds it will start the white smoke again not as bad but it is there,... I am getting code 1316 quite often, and what sounds like a noisy injector? I am at a loss here, If I let it idle for say 5-10 min, it really loads up and dumps the white smoke when I get on the throttle, but then it clears itself and goes away until I come to an idle again , or shut the truck off and restart it the smoke is back again until I drive it a little... I am at a loss here as to what is going on with it, I am taking it to the dealer tomorrow to see if they can stick me for some big $$$ any help is much appreciated
Are you getting a SES light ? On mine last year, i got a SES light, P1316, and a misfire. Turn out to be a loose 9 pin connector under the valve cover. (bad design on plastic locking tabs)..
White smoke is usually unburned fuel. If it's not the UVC harness it could be blow by. There is a thread I was reading earlier today that had a very good explanation of what could be causing white smoke like that. Cleatus and Kwik have some good points/idea's as does ErnestEugene. Check it out: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/7...-cylinder.html
Yes I get the ses light, I get the 1316 quite often... and the 1211 now and then if I am on the pedal too long... I just dont get the smoke at idle or at first start up... It should do it all the time if it was blow by... I would think... and only 40,000 on a navistar remanafactured motor... with no warranty. The rpm's will go up and down just slightly at an idle maybe 100 up and down and idles like there is a miss.
Just a hunch, but I think you've got some bad injectors. Check around the head/exhaust manifold and turbo joints -betcha got fuel "slobber" there. The injectors, or some of them anyway, are failing to properly atomize your fuel. At idle the fuel isn't burning completely thus the smoke, and with a prolonged idle, as you said it, "it really loads up".

Thanks for all the help guys.... Keep em comming... I am going to take it to be diagnosed tomorrow, but I would like to be able to ask them what to do... Buzz test? compresion? leak down? any ideas? thanks again for all of your help!
Sounds like an injector to me too... Have them do a Buzz test and if they find one that sounds weak they will want to replace it. Easy enough to do by yourself or with a friend. Powerstroke Help Network has all the info you will need to do it. But I would be sure to check your UVCH and connectors first... Its well worth the time. If you are mechanically inclined at all pulling the Valve Cover isnt that big of a deal. And if you do that you might as well put a new UVCH on it while your there. Oh bye the way WELCOME TO FTE!!! And let us know what you figure out.

From the manual...:
FJ9 DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) P1316 INDICATES THAT CODES ARE STORED IN THE IDM
I think everyone covered this pretty well. I'd start by ohming the 9 pin connectors on the valve cover. If they check out good try removing your edge to rule out a chip/tuner issue.
Thank you all for your reply's!!! I have ohmed all the gp pins on the connecors and they all check 1.2 to 0.9. I hope to god it is just somnething simple like an injector! I have removed the edge completly! same results.... with or without.... I am praying it is just an injector or something simple like that!! Thank you again for your input!
Well you guys were right, had the truck at the stealer, I mean dealer today.... 3 bad injectors buzz and contrubition test showed 5 and 7 not up to par and 8, mech thought maybe #8 was just a loose uvch for some reason but thought I should have them change#5 and #7 injectors to the tune of $1404.90 HAHAHA.. I ordered 3 remans today for $120.00 each. I'll tackle that this weekend after doing some reading on here about how to do it... Anything special i should be aware of when I pull them or put the new ones in? I am sure it cant be that hard after the vc's are off... I've got that down to about 1/2 hour each now.. Thanks again guys!
Make sure you clean out the cylinders before putting the new ones in!!!! When you pull them out make sure you cover the whole as fast as possible. All of this is explained in the links from Powerstroke Help Network I just wanted to reiterate it.
Check closely your under valve cover 9 pin connector after removing the covers.. If the connector separated, it might be the problem.. see my gallery for pic's of my loose connector.. If loose, make sure you fix it either by slipping a shim behind the locking tabs or go to Ford and get their repair clip.. Keep us updating as to what you find..
UPDATE: installed 3 new injectors today, the three that dealer said were bad, same problem, I still have gobs of smoke at start-up and when I come to an idle.. loads up on me just like before... I am at my wits end... any more help would be appreciated.. I am thinking a sticking injector.. sticking open.
