Lead foot death

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 09-Apr-02 AT 01:48 AM (EST)]I've been working on rebuilding my girlfriends 86 Bronco after an engine fire on the way home frm buying it. I've got it all fixed up and running good, exept for on problem: If I floor it it stalls, and dies. If I feather the pedal it runs and accels fine, it just has a dead spot when accelerating about a quarter of the way down with the pedal.

It's got a 351w, Holley 4180, & a C-6

I've rebuilt the entire vacuum system, and replaced the distributor, and al lot of other things. A vacuum gauge flutters just a little when I hook one to a manifold vauum. Othe than that the damn thing runs great.

Any help would be great.....

I have a similar problem until the engine reaches normal op temp. I put an MSD coil and ignition module in recently but it didn't not change. Still trying to figure it out.

I had a problem similar to that, it would die if I pressed the gas in 1/4 of the way or more unless I put it to the floor. Replaced the carb and hasn't happened since. Good luck

I could be wrong, but it sounds to me like you aren't getting enough of a squirt of gas from your accelerator pump on your carb. Did you rebuild the carb after the engine fire? Maybe the diaphram in the pump got scorched during the fire. You can check this by looking in the carb and opening the throttle by hand.(you probably know this) Anyhow, this would be the first thing I would check.

A fluttering vac. gage would notmally lead me to believe there is a valve problem. But in this case i agree that it is a carburator/fuel delivery problem.

Has the fuel pump been replaced? Also, is the ignition timing correct?

Also check you choke setting. Some mornings I hit the gas and it almost stalls until the choke opens up more 2 minutes later.

I think I just solved my problem. I swapped the card with the one on my 85 bronco that I'm taking apart. The 85 had no problem running. While I haven't had the time to see how the start is on a cold and wet morning, it is already running better.

Just thought I'd updat this thread. We had a $1100.00 valve job done and the culprit ended up being two burnt valves #'s 6 & 7. Runs good now, still doesn't run like a 351 HO should, bust a vast improvement.
Thanks Everyone for your help.
