hi everyone i just bought my first diesel and i have a few questions im sure u can help me out with. first off i got a 1990 f 250 4x6 daully with a 7.3 and a hypermax turbo . first i need to change the oil what type is best and how much does it hold with the filter?
next the front tank leaks and i need to replace it how much fuel does it hold and does it have a fuel pump in the tank or do it have one on the motor the runs both tanks?
next my pyrommeter and boost gauges dont work is there a way to check them ?
thanks and what ive ben reading on here so far has ben a lot of help
I believe the fuel tanks (on mine anyway) hold 19 gallons each. It does not have a fuel pump in the tank, just a sending unit. It just has one on the motor that pulls fuel from either tank. Some may have an electric fuel pump under the drivers seat along with the one on the engine.
As for Oil, I just buy the motorcraft diesel motor oil at wal-mart and I think there is only one particular weight availible. And since it says motorcraft diesel oil on it, its for the international engines anyway. I think it holds three gallons (12 quarts) but not sure. I think I put in 13 quarts because I used the bigger oil filter.
Well, I am going to change the oil in mine right now. I have had the oil in the back seat for over a month and its way over do.
You can use Shell Rotella 15/40 or Delo diesel oil.... or any brand diesel oil which meets SG-CE or CD or better.
Quantity is 10 Qts/litres with standard sized Ford FL748 filter or you can use the PSD filter #1995 which is longer and has more/better filtration but you need to add 1 more qt/ltr for a total of 11 Qts/Ltrs
VOM FSeries/Econoline Owners guide 7.3 Liter Diesel
Clean the filter mounting area of the oil cooler, lightly coat the gasket surface with clean engine oil and hand tighten until gasket contacts the base. THEN TIGHTEN ANOTHER....... 1 1/4 to 2 TURNS. Fill the crankcase and check for leaks.
Thats the filter I just put on motorcraft fl-1995 with 15-40 motorcraft diesel oil. I put in 12 qts which over filled it a little so 11 is exacty right on. Yall have a great day.
thanks guys for the info . i was out side checking things out i found a broken wire for the pyrometer and i have vacume at the guage for the boost gauge but i cant tell how much is there. it increases when i give it more fuel but what does 5 lbs of boost feel like lol. so im still not sure if its the guage or not. and i found some wetness under the fuel filter and im not sure why its there and its fuel. is that what u guys are talking about putting a bolt in to to stop fuel from draining down
Was the broken wire where the leads from the thermocouple attach to the pyrometer lead wire?
What shape is the air filter in?
The fuel under the fuel filter, any chance some was spilled there when changing the filter?
Also make sure the filter base is on tight.
Also there is a drain valve on the filter base, make sure it is closed.
