The son of one of my coworkers has a 97 pickup, I can't rember if it was a ranger or an s-10 but either way this one has me stumped. ( forgive me if this sounds odd but i am going on what I was told on it, never have seen the truck) It is a 5spd, and wont shift at all when the engine is on. you can put it in gear while the truck is off, start it and drive fine in that gear but you have to turn off the engine to shift out of that gear. the clutch seems to be working fine being they can come to a stop and start back up, they just cant get it out of whatever gear they put it in before they started it. they have checked the clutch fluid, and most the other simple stuff. just wondering if one of you guys might have heard of something like this.
sounds to me like the pressure plate is causeing yoiu to not come out of gear all the way. enough to stop but not enough to pull it out of gear. could also need to be bled, they seem to take forever to get it right. id start there and see what you get.
Probably nothing to do with the clutch. You should still be able to shift without using the clutch. Problem is most likely in the tranny.
he said he can still shift if he turns truck off just cant when its running that sounds like a clutch not disengageing causeing a bind like when your on the gas and try and pull it out of gear.
The pressure plate is not dis-engaging the clutch. The throw out bearing could be bad, slave cylinder stuck, air in system, or clutch master cylinder rod has came loose.
Check under dash. On some of the Fords the clutch petal is attached to the master cylinder rod with a flat plate as a lever. This lever has a ball with a white plastic washer that the clutch master cylinder rod snaps over. Over time, the plastic wears out and the mc rod jumps off the lever. Replace the lever which has a new washer. jd
