I have a 03 f250 with the triton 5.4. Problem one is I hear a ticking noise coming from the passenger side that goes away with heavier acceleration. Especially noticable at start up. Could this be the egr valve acting up? I dont think its an exhaust leak.
Problem two is when I make sharp turns the truck has a slight wobble and a clunking noise is heard. Does it with left or right turns. Is this normal for a straight axle front end or do I need to check ball joints, sway bars?
Ticking most likely is exhaust manifold donut. Seems like a common problem on these, I had mine replaced and it went away. First place I would start as it is a pretty simple fix. You should be able to hear it by getting close to the passenger side rear of the engine compartment when the hood is up.
I had a 5.4 that had two broken exhaust studs in the head pretty common problem with these motors. the wobble and clunk could also be bad ball joints jack it up and see if you can move the tire by hand. had this problem also.
a good way to check for small exhaust leaks is to use a small length (2-3ft) of plastic tubing. 1/4" od or so works well. old garden hose may work but will introduce more noise and won't isolate the problem as well.
works like a stethascope.
I had an 01 with a ticking noise and found on this forum that it was the dust shield between the flywheel and the transmission, removed the 2 bolts and used RTV sealant around the edge, cured the problem. I also thought it was an exhaust leak at first.
I had a similar issue with my 01 5.4L, I couldn't figure it out. I also thought it might be an exhaust leak, it turned out the tensioner was sticking until it warmed up. Replaced that and the noise went away, that might be your issue or maybe not. How many miles are on your 03?
You place the tubing in your ear (or close to it holding it with thumb and forefinger) and use the other end to probe around the exhaust flange area. Works as a perfect automotive stehascope. great for finding/isolating any type of exhaust, vacuum etc.. noise. Once you use it you will never forget it.
Does ur guy's tickin go away when the engine warms up? If it goes away, then u have a exhaust leak. Check the studs on ur exhaust manifolds. If their are some missin, then u have a leak for sure. I have two missin on the left bank on my v-10
My truck started ticking and i thought it was an exhaust leak like most of you guys mention, i wasnt worried about it so i let it go, a couple of days later my spark plug blew out.......I have the 5.4 also.......Just something you might want to check into also before you have to buy a new head
2002 F-250
same problems
I to have same two problems the ticking I have not figured out mechcanics where I work put box on truck and it shows no problems for ticking so hopefully it's a easy fix with donut gasket.
Wheel wobble and clunk it will do this in 4 wheel drive on sharp turns.also I when I replaced antisway shock new shock was bigger then factory and gets hung on bracket causing a slight hang on full turns.
