When I was stationed in Norfolk this fight was going on back in the 70's. There is a group of home owners that the only access to thier homes is by driving on the beach. They have government property between them and the highway, so use the access roads to the beach and drive in and out along the beach. Envirnomental activist have been trying to close that area and told them to abandon thier homes or learn to walk.
The areas they want to close are by far some of the best surf fishing spots in NC. They have tournaments and all kinds of fishing events in these ares. So to answer you question for surf fishing for stripers these are the best spots most of the time for catching them.
I agree with ya. I forgot to put this in but this group is from out of state and is actually suing the Park Service that goes over and beyond to keep the beaches and wildlife protected. The big thing with these people is that they say the bird population has decreased and the beaches need to be closed now, not thinking of all the "People" that would be extremely hurt from it.
those tree huggers, they did the same to us in NJ years back.now 1 beach you can't walk on it at all in the summer. another you can only drive on in cold weather if it isn't washed out from storms. untop of that our govenor is closeing 8 state parks from being used to close budget gaps. and one of them is our only year round buggy beach for surf fishing.another holds our highest point of elavation [1680 feet] and has the ap. trail going right threw it.
It's great around Cape Lookout in colder weather.....
The Red Drum fishing is 2nd to none---ANYWHERE!......
Aside from that....Great flounder in the summer......Sea mullet year-round.....Bluefish nearly year round......
yeah i know what your talking about on red fish (drum) we pound'm as well,
no stripers on the west coast of florida, i miss that catching them in mass.
we have some flounder as well, but i dont think they get as big as they do on the east coast.
and sea mullett????lol, the mullet we have here you get with a cast net, they dont bite anything.......its big among blacks, asians, and spanish, they love smoking them........i get them from a cast net, drop a circle hook through there lips, and use'm as bait
I'm glad California don't have those kind of stupid laws prohibiting access because of some fish or bird or beetle bug.
I was going to say: Welcome to California! That's why people should be concerned about what happens out there because it eventually infects the rest of the country. There is no compromise, and decrease in habitat or population is always entirely due to man's interference (usualy having some form of fun or other) and never from natural causes.

There's 'mullet'; and there's 'sea mullet'.
I know the 'mullet' you're talking about. We mostly cast-net them in the sound......Nice 3" to 4" 'jumping' mullet are great for live bait (or cut). The bigger ones ain't bad either.
The 'sea mullet' are commonly called whiting. Ocean fish. FANTASTIC to eat, and the easiest fish in the world to fillet. Them suckers LOVE sand fleas, but they'll hit shrimp, and smaller cut bait too.
Oh yeah....Grey trout hit around here pretty good too.....Mostly in the Spring and in the Fall.
Just to keep yall updated. The judge continued the hearing till next Friday to allow time to see if the Environmentalist people and the Park Service can reach a settlement. I can't really say it better then these links so I will just let you read them. The first one is good as it is pretty much in lamens terms.
