Ok, so tonight I started taking off my transmission pan to do the filter and gasket on my truck. This is the first time I've done this to my current truck, and the transmission was rebuilt about 35k miles ago. I'm not sure when the last time the filter was done, but its been awhile I'm sure. Well as it was getting dark, I dropped the pan and drained the fluid. I notice a BOLT rolling around in the pan. It looks like it may be from the filter itself, but I'm not sure, and I didn't have time to scope it out anymore due to light/mosquitos/dinner. Tell me if you know what this may have come from. Tomorrow night I'm going to go finish the job, but I don't think I can wait till then. The transmission has been slipping in OD lately. I was pissed that it was happening, but I wasn't sure what caused it. Could this have ANYTHING to do with it? The pan was filthy, the fluid was disgusting, and the gasket was leaking. It has been doing it for awhile. Been adding a qt or so a month for about 6 mos.
Anyway, on to the pics. Its just a regular old AOD.
Looks to me to be a valve body bolt. and with the lenght of it , maybe one of the filter. Or it could be one that goes through both the 2 valve body halves , securing it to the case. I'm pretty sure it is of/from the valve body though. You should be able to see what hole it cam out of ( maybe after you pull the filter down). With that bolt being out it could of caused an internal line pressure leak, most commonly causing shuttering, early or late shifts.Make sure you find out where it came from and replace it snuggly. And believe it or not that AOD my be common but quite a complicated and weak transmission.
Go to this site and learn all you want to know about the internals of the AOD. http://www.clickclickracing.com/forums/
Look in the "Click Click Tech" section........."silverFox" is the master of AOD.
He showed me.........I needed the much stronger and cheaper small block C6 for my truck. I made the swap for half the price of fixing the AOD.
i am going to say valve body bolt as well, pull the filter and see if theres any obvious holes. If so replace the bolt and torque down, i think its like 30 inch lbs, not real sure though, check a manual. More i think abbout it the more i think its a valve body bolt, i saw enough of them while workin at the trans shop.
Thanks a lot guys. I'll definitely be checking thoroughly tomorrow afternoon. Man I wanted to do a C6 swap, but I heard since its only a 3sp that the 302 will be hunting for another gear all the time. I don't want to be cruising at like 3500rpm at 60mph, haha. I need to do some more research on it, but would you suggest that trans swap for my truck?
Hmm, well I've been driving my truck a lot out of OD lately since it will slip and I'm scared to mess the trans up worse. I can get a nice C6 for less than 1k from what I've seen so far online and at work. Maybe I could get a lower rear gear than what I have to make up for the missing gear? I'm not sure what my gear ratio is right now though anyway. I guess I'll look into it. I just hope I can find the place this bolt goes tomorrow, haha.
