Tonneau cover snaps

I was wondering if anybody here has ever changed snaps on an extang tarp, I broke a few on mine this winter.

Btw, is there any particular procedure on installing/disinstalling these tarps without breaking snaps or actually getting them even all snapped, I mean mine is just ridiculously hard to get on, maybe there are tricks to this that I don't know about?

I bought the truck with it on so I have no litterature for it, any help would be very much apreciated

I've done it. The snaps on the rails are offset and can be flipped to tighten or loosen the tarp, you also have two settings for the cross bows. There is a high and low tab the bow ends fit into. Between those adjustments, you have quite a bit play.

For the snap, the rail side is simple, just slide on and slide off. The tarp snaps are blind rivoted together. Extang has a simple tool that you clamp or hammer the ends together to bell the rivot out. To remove the old one (if it's still attached), you need to drill the belled rod out of the center of the underside of the snap (where the male end goes in.) Once that bell is completely removed the snap will be in two pieces, the top button and the snap bottom. Installation is pretty much the reverse, set the top and bottom pieces in the existing hole, then put the tool on the snap and compress it.

I have a Extang BlackMax tonneau for my short bed. I've found that it's easier to get the tarp on on sunny days. Otherwise, I have one of those little ceramic space heaters and place that in the bed with most of the snaps snaped and the heat from the heater warms the tarp enough to allow me to get it snapped all the way around. It takes awhile in the middle of winter but it does work.

lanechange,
i use a screwdriver & twist off each snap when i remove my cover, its just too easy to tear/pop off the snaps. i bought my truck with a cover installed as well, i sure wouldn't pay for one of these types of covers. as far as putting it on, NJF350 has the idea. the sun will heat it up as well allowing the vinyl to stretch, although i'd be lying if i didn't say i've used vice grips to tightly grap an edge & pull it taught just watch not to tear it.

Thanks schneidz

Pretty much what I thought, I put the bedside covers and toolbox from my old truck back on. That tarp thing is just too inconvenient for anything more then very occasional use.
