We replaced my Thermostat with a 190 Degree T-stat, we want to run some flush through my truck but the thing wont get up to temperature for the Thermostat to open up, we let it sit and run 45 minutes ran it up and down the road and tried again this morning and still nothing. Is something wrong with it?
I have the same problem with mine and I can let it setand idle for an hour and it'll never get warm and run it into town (2 miles) and it won't, let me go to Longbeach (15 miles) it'll just start and when I slow down or stop I'm right back on the cold side. Because of the type of engine when it's cold, they're cold to. Needs a real load to warm up and then they do cool faster.
At first following the Flush instructions it said to remove all antifreeze and fill with plain water and the flush and let sit and run until up to operating temperature, then to drain and refill with new antifreeze.
It just took some extra work to get it up to operating temperature.
Is your new antifreeze mixed at least 70/30 with water?
My truck starts making heat, even on a cold day, at an intersection that is 1.8 miles from my house. Like clockwork, when I'm sitting at that light waiting for it to turn green, it kicks down to the normal idle and I can feel warmth from the heater.
During warm weather, it kicks down to regular idle at the intersection that's slightly under a mile from my house.
That is your problem. You can get the correct thermostat at an IH or ford dealer. I had the opposite problem when I tried a generic T-stat. There is only one thermostat for the 6.9, with only one heat setting (195 I think).
My truck performs exactly like matt's truck with the correct T- stat. Its not so much that the aftermarket replacement is junk as much as it works differently and is not compatible with how these engines are set up.
