The warranty follows the truck, not the owner. You should take it to the dealer if it is still under warranty.

unfortunately the truck has 49,000 miles on it and is out of the 3 yr 36,000 warranty.

Sorry to hear that. Hopefully someone will come along w/ the answer on doing it yourself. You also might look for it in the workshop manual. Below is a link to an on-line manual. Enjoy

Thanks D8 - it keeps me out of the bars at night!

Seriously - MOST of the info comes from other folks and past posts from this site. I just decided some time ago to try to catalogue it so I could get to it quickly.

For example - In the case of the post above - thank Ozx3+1!

i just had the same problem with my 2006. mine was covered under warranty (25,000 on the truck) the dealership fix the problem in a hour. from what i can tell from the tech write up it is a simple fix. "REMOVED REAR DRIVESHAFT. REMOVED PINION FLANGE, REMOVED AND REPLACED PINION SEAL. CLEANED AREA. TOPPED OFF REAR AXLE FLUID. REINSTALLED DRIVESHAFT." That is what was writen on the service invoice. The tech also did standard inspection of the tires, battery, and other stuff.
hope this helps. And enjoy your new truck.

i was hoping that it would be easy like that. i mean i have changed them before but i have never owned anything this new or of this caliber so i just wanted to check so that i didn't get in over my head with having to purchase any special tools and what not. thank you all for your words of wisdom. i am sure that i will have plenty more questions later on down the line! i honestly don't know what i would do without this place!

Removal
  1. CAUTION: The color on the rear face of the drive pinion nut is critical to this repair. Use the same color new drive pinion nut for installation. If a new collapsible spacer must be installed for pinion bearing preload reduction, install the nut supplied with the new spacer kit or damage to the component may occur.

NOTE: The rear wheels and brake calipers must be removed to prevent brake drag during drive pinion bearing preload adjustment.

Remove the rear brake calipers. For additional information, refer to Section 206-04.
  1. Remove the driveshaft. For additional information, refer to Section 205-01.
  1. Install a Nm torque wrench on the pinion nut and record the rotational torque required to maintain rotation of the pinion through several revolutions.
    1. CAUTION: After removal of the pinion nut, discard it. A new nut must be used for installation.

Using the special tool, hold the pinion flange while removing the pinion nut.
      1. Mark the pinion flange in relation to the drive pinion stem to make sure alignment is correct during installation.
        1. Using the special tool, remove the pinion flange.
          1. Force up on the metal flange of the rear axle drive pinion seal. Install gripping pliers to the seal flange and strike with a hammer until the rear axle drive pinion seal is removed.
            Installation
            1. Lubricate the new pinion seal with clean premium long-life grease.
            1. CAUTION: If the rear axle drive pinion seal becomes misaligned during installation, remove the rear axle drive pinion seal and replace it with a new seal.

Using the special tool, install a new rear axle drive pinion seal.
              1. Lubricate the pinion flange splines with clean synthetic rear axle lubricant.
              1. NOTE: Disregard the scribe marks if a new pinion flange is being installed.

Align the pinion flange with the drive pinion shaft.
                1. With the pinion flange in place in the rear axle housing, use the special tool to install the pinion flange.
                  1. Select the correct pinion nut for installation.

                    <TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=3 border=1><CAPTION>10.5 In. Full Float Drive Pinion Nut </CAPTION><TBODY><TR><TH vAlign=bottom align=middle>Part Number</TH><TH vAlign=bottom align=middle>Color Description</TH><TH vAlign=bottom align=middle>Application</TH></TR><TR><TD vAlign=top align=middle>19G405</TD><TD vAlign=top align=middle>Blue</TD><TD vAlign=top align=middle>Axles built before 7/16/07</TD></TR><TR><TD vAlign=top align=middle>4320</TD><TD vAlign=top align=middle>White</TD><TD vAlign=top align=middle>Axles built after 7/16/07</TD></TR><TR><TD vAlign=top align=middle>4C121</TD><TD vAlign=top align=middle>White</TD><TD vAlign=top align=middle>Kit with spacer for all 266.7 mm (10.50 in) axles</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>
                  1. CAUTION: Install a new pinion nut with the same color as the original if not replacing the collapsible spacer or damage to the component may occur.

Install the new washer and pinion nut. Only hand-tighten the pinion nut at this time.
                  1. CAUTION: Do not loosen the pinion nut to reduce drive pinion bearing preload. Install a new drive pinion collapsible spacer and pinion nut if drive pinion bearing preload reduction is necessary. If a new collapsible spacer must be installed for pinion bearing preload reduction, install the nut supplied with the new spacer kit or damage to the component may occur.

Using the special tool to hold the pinion flange, tighten the pinion nut to set the drive pinion bearing preload.
                    • Tighten the pinion nut, rotating the pinion occasionally to make sure the drive pinion bearings are seating correctly. Take frequent drive pinion bearing preload readings by rotating the drive pinion gear with a Nm (lb-in) torque wrench. The final readings must be 0.56 Nm (5 lb-in) more than the initial reading taken during removal.
                  1. Install the driveshaft. For additional information, refer to Section 205-01.
                  1. Install the brake calipers. For additional information, refer to Section 206-04.

Great info! My 03 also has a pinion seal leak which I need to fix (replaced by dealer at 4000 mi and leaking again!). Is the info you supplied the same for an 03 or is their a better link?

You say youjust purchased the Truck, was it from a dealership? If it was I would think they would fix it being how you just purchased it the day before. I would ask anyway before I would fix it.
