I too would like to see photos. It sounds like the perfect set up. Can it be arranged so that a kids dvd is playing in the rear and an adult movie up front. Thanks dan
Yes, but you have to disable the in motion lockout. Most installers know how to do it, but won't due to liability issues. I did the bypass before it was installed. I do not watch DVDs while driving, I bypassed mainly for full access to the nav and bluetooth functions while in motion. Without the bypass, you have to stop the truck and apply the parking brake. That was a pain in the ***.
I have an 02 Excursion with factory rear DVD. I had a Pioneer Avic-D3 installed. The steering wheel controls work, and it works with the rear DVD system. You can even watch the rear DVD on the Pioneer screen. I have bluetooth, XM w/nav traffic, Sirius, back up camera and an IPOD attachment. The rear seat contols can not be used. I had them removed and he installed an AC inverter with audio/video inputs for a game system hook up in it's place.
If you don't mind me asking, how did that set you back? I am looking at doing something similar with the 2005 Excursion I am buying.

Everything was done at different times. The latest was replacing the AVIC-D2 with the D3. I bought the D3 on-line from an electronics website called Al & Eds or something like that for $529.00 shipped. Cheapest price I was able to find. The bluetooth module was about $150.00, the sat radio tuners are extra and about $80 for Sirius and $200.00 for XM with Nav traffic. I do not remember what the power supply cost. About $50.00 for the parts need to retain steering wheel controls, $200.00 to add wireless headphones (02 had wired rear headphones) and about $300.00 to get everything installed.
hey mumbo, just curious, how come you have sirius and xm?
Sirius for Howard Stern, Xm for Nav traffic. You can get just Nav traffic from XM without their programing, but it gave me an annoying XM updating message. So I added their programing too. It's all a waste of money, because my Excursion sits in my garage for sometimes 2 or 3 months without being used. I have to take it out for an inspection this month, then I may use it early May, then again in late June.
Guys i hate to say this but did you know that excursions ,f 250s f 350s ect are the easyest trucks to steal on the market today . I SAY THIS because i installed a kenwood radio on mine and it did not lasted 4 very long time (2 month ) now im on my 3 rd radio and everyone that i know or do this agree on this and had theirs stolen too. so be carefull what you put on and install a security system first .
My aftermarket navigation ordered it off eBay, one of those chinese one for less than 300, it states that it comes with steering wheel function, but the installer who does all my audio work says he could not connect it, did anyone have issue's with there. Also my over head DVD wont work like no power as if the dash took over. Then the rear audio controls dont work either like to control the radio. Please help I want all my control to work.
I also have one of the cheap Chinese in dash DVD players. I can not help with the rear seat DVD player, since my X does not have it. In addition, from what I have heard the rear audio controls will not work with most after market head units, including the ones we have.
I can help with the steering wheel controls, the instructions, which are clearly written by someone who has English as a second (or third) language, seem to indicate that you need to connect the wire for the first steering wheel control key to the steering wheel control wire from the vehicle (the Lt Blue/Red wire in the “extra plug” on the back of the stock head unit) and the second steering wheel control key wire should be grounded. I found that in order to make my steering wheel controls function correctly I had to hook both steering wheel control key wires up to the steering wheel control wire from the vehicle (the Lt Blue/Red wire in the “extra plug”).
Thanks for your help. I will print this off and give it to the shop that installs all my stuff. I just need to get the rear dvd player working again ugh.
