Stroker 393 question

What piston should I use with stock 85 HO heads? I want to keep it around 9.5 to one. I'm going to use this motor in an RV and don't think I need high dollar pistons like KB or Probe. Is there a stock 302 dish that would work? I don't know what the cc is of th stock 85 HO heads on my 351W.

Stroker 393 question

I think I would at least get a hypereutectic for it, there are increased side loads with this setup and I am not sure a cast piston would be up to the task. I think there is a compression calculator somewhere around this site. I would not use the HO heads that you are thinking of using. The only difference between the HO and regular windsor is the cam (I think compression is higher but nosure, do not have any info in front of me) and the intake manifold. The head has the same size ports and valves as a 289 or 260 head and those heads are too small for even a 260. Step up to a gt40p($500.00, bolt-on) head and you will get a great responding engine that is still within a decent budget(especially if you have the HO heads rebuilt properly, the cost will be close to the gt40p heads.

I believe that the cc's of a E5TE head are 65 cc's. I, too, would encourage the use of hypereutectic pistons. Also, I would encourage you to make sure the engine is zero decked and that the head gasket is not too thick (.038" is good).

OK thanks for the advise. What is ment by zero decking and what is the proper way to do it.

Stroker 393 question

'Zero deck' is where the top of the piston is flush with the top of the cylinder case (block). Really and truly flush. If it is .020" below deck that will effect how the engine operates. It is not uncommon to find pistons as much as .060" below deck.

The reason to do this is to benefit from the quench built into those heads. Although they don't have as much quench as the E6SE heads (or 351 C9AE, or 289 C6OE, or F7TE/GT40p heads), they do have quench and your engine will tolerate higher compression better with zero deck and quench.

I meant to add that your machinist is the one to zero deck your engine. There are many ways to do it but he'll probably just cut the tops of the cylinder case. It cost me $150 to have my 292 zero decked.
