On a stock truck the van turbo will be slugish on the bottom. The van has no intercooler. The exhaust side of the van turbo is larger and allows for lower egt's and the ability to build power at higher rpm's on the truck engine. With the right supporting mods 400 rwhp is pretty easy.

Now isn't that an eye opener for folks who don't want to shell out for a BB unit?
Yeah, quite a few here have the van turbo. Depending on how much shopping, price checking, and work you do yourself -- you could have anywhere from $300 to $600+ in the upgrade. Me, I watched eBay for a used turbo ($80, which is cheap), rebuilt it myself with a $100 kit, then add the flange adapter from Beans is all that's 100% necessary for you to buy and I'm in it for less than $300. Of course, you can spend more too, by getting a non-EBPV turbo pedistal instead of blocking yours off and add extras like an ATS compressor housing.
orng1, I see you're a pretty new user so some of this may be a little confusing right now, but hang in there and it will make sense. Don't be afraid to ask questions.
Somebody was offering for $400 shipped: The van had 150k when i took it off. I bought it with 140k, so I have no idea if it has ever been replaced. There is normal shaft play.
Any idea if that is good or a little past since it has 150K on it.

I think I would rebuild it for piece of mind. If I were going to be going through all the work the $100 rebuild kit would be worth the money. Just a thought.
OP - I have heard of people retaining the EBPV. You have to cut the flange off yours and weld it on the van turbos IIRC. Brandon or Mech or Kris or somebody smarter will know.
Mech2161 - You should really make the Airflow Systems in you sig a link, too! It might help them sell a few more of those fancy new systems.

Probably would do just that.
I am the OP. Why would I want to retain the EBPV other than faster warm ups in the winter.
With 150K on it, I would rebuild it. That was right about the mileage my stock turbo let go.
You can have the flanges cut off and keep the EBPV. That's how mine is setup right now, after seeing how Kevin (Mech2126) had it done back when he was running a van turbo. To my knowledge, he was the first one here to do it and I've been the only other one to have it done. There are pics in my Webshots of the modified EBPV.
I kept mine to use as an exhaust brake while towing. However, after having it, I never used it as an exhaust brake and would only occasionally use it for warmup when it was close to 0* outside and I forgot to plug the truck in. If it did it all over again, I would go with the complete EBPV delete.

Sounds like that is the path I will take. So is it worth $400?
I will be wanting to get rid of the EBPV altogether so the Bean's Diesel Flange will do that?
If it came with the non-EBPV pedistal as well, I'd say it was worth $400. If it's just the turbo, I personally wouldn't have paid that much for a used one with that many miles. I let probably 4-5 of them go though before I finally found a good deal. Now you're looking at another $100 for a rebuild kit and in it for $500. That's getting awfully close to the price of a new van turbo to begin with, unless the price of them has gone up quite a bit. I remember them being around $600-$700.
However, considering the other options for turbo upgrades and their cost, $400 is considerably less than that, so it's still a good deal. I'm just always on the search for a deal, and if one is patient, they can usually find somebody selling something who has no idea what it is or how much it's worth.
To get rid of the EBPV, yes Bean's flange will do that and is the way I would go. I've seen several of those flanges in person to compare them and like Bean's the best. Seem to be machined better and smoother transition from turbo to flange.
You'll need to do something with the pedistal too though. Can't just leave the rod hanging. Either modify your current pedistal (I have no idea how, but it's been talked about numberous times around here, so somebody knows) or go with a non-EBPV pedistal - which is the way I would do it. But, that's another $125, available at Dieselsite. That's why if the turbo came with the non-EBPV pedistal, I think the $400 is a good deal.
Aklim,
The reasons I want to keep and always will keep my EBPV are the two already mentioned. I doubt things are warm enough on the isthmus to not need it. It really does warm the truck up faster. The second is for braking. I have the DP Tuner decel tune (one of the first to get it ) and I LOVE IT! You have an X so it might not be as useful to you. I don't really use it empty, with the exception of impressing people BUT when I am pulling some weight I am certain it helps slow the truck.
PM me if you get down this way and I can show you. I think I may get a video made of it in action. I love it so much I want to help Jody sell it!
Jeremy - I think you and I have a lot in common. I am always looking for the right upgrade at the right price. I have only paid full price for one mod in my sig and that is the John Wood VB (Dennis doesn't run sales). Everything else was at a discount. I figure I have saved almost $450 on mods by being patient. I am looking for...van turbo...leveling kit...tires...headlights...tailgate...injectors... you never know what you might see one day.
