While changing brake pads today I discovered that my front left u-joint seal leading to the transfer case was loose and that my right one was leaking grease. Please tell me, how bad is this going to be???
from what you described..sounds like your talking about the front drive shaft..and not the axel shaft...take shaft out..mark shaft so it will go back together the same way and stay balanced..you can use a hammer..i dont recomend it..i use a vise or press...replace u-joints..(always do both ends of shaft) put the shaft back in..your done...$20 a piece for joints give or take...
a (little) grease ooozzzzing out of the seal is normal if they've been greased recently. but loose joints need to be replaced for proper use. its not that big of a deal. basically-old ones come out-new ones go in. but it can be a pain to do that. its IMPORTANT to do like ron said and mark the place where the shaft comes out to be put in the same holes when put back in (when putting the shaft in the truck) the shaft is balanced and sits in a specific way. but overall you can do them yourself-just expect to have patience. good luck

the shaft its self needs to be marked before the joints comes out..the shaft is balanced before it goes into the truck..it doesnt matter how they come of the yokes.
