I have a 99 Ford F150 5.4 with a 9.75 rear diff
I need to replace it any opinion on what some
other guys use if switched. Looking at
Auburn, Eaton, Detroit,or Dana are there
some better then others or different problems
with them. The clutch pack keeps going bad
in the diff that I have now so I am going to replace
the thing and be done with it.
Could you be more elaborate? How do they "go bad"? Are you adding the correct ammount of LS additive, if at all? If it "keeps going bad" as you say, I would look into a possible problem with your diff, or whoever is installing and setting it up. Mine is stock with 108K miles on it and it is still pretty darn tight.
I went with the eaton detroit truetrac and I couldn't be happier. Made it like a whole new truck. No clutch packs, just worm gears. I don't know if you looked at them or not, but their like a reverse open rear end. When one tires slips all the power is sent to the tire that grabs but when you get on it they both spin. Plus it runs on normal gear lube. Excellent for dirt roads and snow. I've broken 3 ford LS, their junk. The manual might be harder on them then the automatic is. But mine is a 8.8
I think I am going with the detroit truetrac that seams to be the best.
The first set of packs I put in was because I seen the tabs broke off one
of the clutch so I hade it replaced. About 10,000 miles later it started to do it
again so I took the cover of again and more tabs. When I hade it rebuldt I hade the shop put in AmsOil and 1 Ford Ls oil. Then about 30,00 miles latter I hade tiers put on my truck and the shop took it apart and the guy is a Drag racer at the track I work for he looked at it and the tabs broke off again. I have to do some thing different I dont want to change it again.
