E40D problems

E40D problems
Hi, I just picked up an '92 F150 with a 5.0L and an E40D transmission.
My tranny doesn't sit in park. If the truck is running and I put it into park, it goes in reverse.
There is a definite shift between where park should be and reverse. Reverse itself works fine, neutral is there and all forward gears are fine. I have to start it in neutral and use the parking brake to leave it.
Fluid is fine - clear, not discolored, no bad smell. Engine won't start in gear, but will in park - but then it starts going backwards immediately...
Any help and/or suggestions will be greatly appreciated!
