e40d stays in drive

I have a 1991 f150 with a 4.9L. At one time the overdrive did not work, and the transmission would shudder at high speeds. I changed the fluid and filter, including the tq. converter fluid. Now it stays in a forward gear. You have to select neutral position to start the engine, and as soon as it starts, it takes off. If you select Park, the engine strains, select Reverse, it goes forward will not shift through gears. select Neutral same thing. Select Drive, everything is fine. And now the overdrive works. Where would you suggest I look first?

Not an expert but it sounds like the forward clutch pack has welded itself together.

Yup

I concur with that thought. Sounds like the forward clutch is welded itself together.

This was common with TH200 and TH200-4R transmissions, the ones with the stamped clutch drums. Seen them roasted so badly, the assembly couldn't be taken apart.
