Post charging system

I own an 84 ford 302 and I cannot figure out why the battery is not holding a charge. I've completely rebuilt the entire engine as well as replaced all other parts, mostly motorcraft. I didn't have this problem before I removed the engine so I can't figure it out. The thing is I have a new altenator, battery, voltage regulator, starter, cables, grounds, and solenoid.

I have an ammeter for my battery gauge. All the new parts have even been tested after purchase. The solenoid consists of the red and black cables obviously, a green wire approx. 10 gauge, the wire for the underhood light and a red and blue wire coming from a harness. Its possible that I do not have these hooked up right or that Im missing a wire.

The red cable, green wire and underhood wire(black w/orange stripe)are connected to the same terminal. The black cable is connected to the other big post and Im assuming the red wire w/blue stripe is for the ignition switch and is hooked up to the "S" post on the solenoid. I do not have a clue. Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Does your alternator wiring look like the above picture?

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 04-Nov-02 AT 03:23 PM (EST)]yeah pretty much. Ive put an edelbrock carb on, so Ive found that the stator wire from the alternator is not needed. The problem would be that Im not an electronics expert and when it comes to testing wires and all that, I get lost. Would the ground on the firewall to the block have anything thing to do with it? That would be the only ground that might not be getting a solid connection.

Also, the one thing Ive noticed is the wire coming from the "s" on the regulator is a different color than the wire coming from the harness next to the solenoid, which I asssumed was the ignition switch wire. I dont know if the wires are connected together somewhere inside the harness.

The wire from "S" just hooks to the electric choke. Try checking your accesories, like stereo, etc. and check the ignition switch itself. You mentioned having an ammeter- check the parasitic load with the key off. E-mail me if you need any other help.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 04-Nov-02 AT 07:36 PM (EST)]Im pretty sure the ignition switch is fine. I dont have a radio in the vehicle right now. If I jump start the vehicle, it will start right up and run smooth. Ive even turned on all the accessories, no problem. When I put a voltmeter on the battery while its running, it only shows about 11.6 volts and if I watch it long enough it decreases little by little.

As soon as I shut the vehicle off, when I try to restart it, it turns over as if the battery is dead. It just makes that clicking sound as if the cables are connected good enough. Maybe my starter is pulling to many amps? I looked at diagrams on testing the amps that the starter is pulling but Im not real good at understanding them.

One other thing is that I dont think my ammeter is working and I cant remember if it worked before I pulled the engine. The gauge needle is right in the middle all the time and I havent noticed any movement while turning the key. I unhooked the battery cables, gauge didnt move. If this gauge is bad, could that be the problem?

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 04-Nov-02 AT 08:39 PM (EST)]have you tried just taking the battery to the nearest Ho'Reilly or VatoZone to be tested?? with only 11.6 Volts (while running!) you could just have a bad cell. always start w/ the obvious.
