Are the new V-10's 07 and newer really a good motor maybe thinking some day about getting a newer truck what kind of gas mileage are you guys getting, and towing and general usefullness of motor just curious I currentlly drive a 77 f150 4x4 with a 400 and 36" tires I have a work vehicle that I drive most of the time so I would only drive this truck on the weekends to haul wood and to run around so anything above 12 mpg would be great. Thanks in advance.

They are a great motor, lots of power and very reliable, excellent tranny as well. 12 mpg is definetly doable but if you're towing heavy expect closer to 9 mpg. I've seen as good as 14.5 mpg highway @ 65 mph.
The 6.8L is the right choice over the 5.4. It will also tolerate the weekend use far better than the diesel. Stock average MPG 11 empty 9 towing. As you see mine now...6-9 mpg. I am about to do a new offical measurement -- I doubt it will be different
Man I can get almost 10 mpg out of my 400 on the highway now running a 4 barrel carb a c6 and 36" tires and 4.10 gears. I thought about putting fuel injection on mine for about 1200 bucks and maybe an overdrive tranny I may just do that insteaad of spending almost 8 times the money on a newer truck to get the same mileage I like the new trucks but it may not be worth it for me since I only drive it about 2 days a week. I may just get another truck to beat around in the winter to save the body on mine probably just a early to mid 90's pickup.
Yesterday I did a new official test of the milage. 100 miles into the wind and then back with a tail wind. This was the first test with the banks chip, headers and exhaust.
65 mph, 2500 rpm, 5th gear
well, rolled 1300 miles so i figured it would be alright with fred if i let her loose. starting at about 10mph i put my foot down and was pleasantly surprised. i come from conseq. dohc 4.7l toyota v8's that love to rev smoothly. the v10 was not harsh at all. it actually did not seem like it was straining much at all. very civilized for such a large engine. plenty fast too. i bet she would do 0-60 close to 8 - fast enough for 99.9999% of people. the trany was very smooth, as always. i think this drivetrain is very good. also - where my tundra would downshift to sometimes 3rd gear the v10 stays in 5th (empty) up a big hill by my house. it has gobs of torque. now if i could just figure out how to soften the ride more when empty (topper ordered).
My old 99' which is bone stock gets a consistent 12mpg city/highway on my daily commute which is about 30 miles.
Towing my 26 ft travel trailer it gets 9-11mpg. Towing my FJ40 on the car hauler (about 10k) it gets 12mpg.
I drive at 60 mph and have 4.30's.
I have never taken this truck on a highway trip empty but I would think it should get 13-14 empty.
Just was from the poconos to hershey ,hershey to allentown and back up pennsylvania turnpike north.Cruise set at 72 most of the way, with a nasty wind at times, got 12 mpg on the digital readout.
