I'm going to be replacing my `04 Taurus with either an `06 Fusion or an `06 Five Hundred. I've driven each and they both are nice in their own way. Also the fuel ecomony ratings appear to be the same for each vehicle 21/29, how can that be? Does anyone here own each, which do you prefer and why? Thanks!
Leased a 2005 Five-Hundred Limited, got a 2007 Fusion SE 4-cyl to replace it about a year ago. The more I drove the Five-Hundred, the more disappointed I became with it. It just wasn't refined enough to be a luxury car (so-so ride, not very quiet), but it wasn't enough fun to drive to be a sports sedan. Kind of a car in search of a personality. Around-town driving averaged about 24 mpg.
The Fusion is a great little car. Not quite as roomy, and this SE sure doesn't have all the goodies the 500 Limited had, but it's a much nicer car to drive. Rides better, it's quieter, and it's just a BLAST to drive. And I'm getting about 29 mpg with the same type of around town/ country highway driving.
Both are good cars. I personally like the Five Hundred just because its more of a luxury car than the Fusion.
The Fusion tries to act like its a little sportscar and Im sorry, but if I want a sportscar I'll buy a Mustang.
I also dont like the Euro taillights that the Fusion has. Those went out of style over 5 years ago.
The 500 is a Taurus. Ford had a stupid strategy where they gave their entire product line names that started with an F. The Windstar become the Freestar, the Taurus the Five Hundred, etc. Obviously the strategy failed and they reverted the names.
I'd pass on the 500 and go with the Taurus. The 500 used the old underpowered Vulcan 3.0L V6 that the previous Taurus' used for years, the new version uses the all new 3.5L V6.
I like the Taurus for one very good reason, its high seating position found in no other car (except the Sable) sold in North America.
My wife is going to lease a Taurus this fall, as soon as her current lease (a fugly Murano) expires.
Yeah, but the 4 valve 3.0 still has alot of car to move around, where as the new taraus has the 3.5 265 hp engine. The 3.5 makes it a whole lot funner to drive. I have an 08 fusion, it is one well thought out and put together car. It's a black sel with a spoiler and moonroof, it's one sporty looking auto. I have the 2.3 dohc and it has plenty of power, the V-6 should fly. I get 24-25 around town and 30-32 mpg highway, depends on how hard I push it. The fusion is one terrific car, it's one of fords better idea's. The 500 is sorta like a buick, you mostly see older folks driving them. Now the taraus X is one cool AWD station wagon, I would buy that over the regular 500/taraus. But for a regular sedan, it's the fusion all the way.
