05 silverado to a 05 excursion

Hi all, We've got an 05 Silverado 2500HD with the duramax and we're thinking of making the switch to an 05 excursion. We need to move more than six people on a semi regular basis but don't really want to give up the towing ability, thought the excursion might fit the bill.

We're also thinking about going gas, right now gas is cheaper than diesel by quite a bit and I can't see the mileage difference making up for it.

I also assume ride/handling/parking are all going to be about the same.

Any input would be appreciated.

Thanks

Gord

You might be surprised with regards to the mileage. What kind of mileage are you getting in your Cheby? If it is anything like a friend on mine then you might be o.k. sticking with the diesel. He is getting 12 overall in his Duramax and I get 15/16 mixed with 20+ highway in my 03 Ex.

I just went from a 2002 suburban LT 2500 4x4 to a 2003 Excursion Eddie Bauer gas V10 4x4, here is my experience so far.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o>

The X doesn't ride as well as my suburban did, this is probably due to the fact that the Chevy had IFS. This is not to say the ride is bad in the X it’s just that the suburban was a little more civilized. I have ridden in the same model truck you have, which was very comparable to my suburban, so I think you will find the same experience I did. Interior and exterior is all a matter of opinion, since I have owned Chevys for the last 6 years I am partial to their interior although I think the leather quality in the X is better than that of my Suburban. IMO exterior looks is a tossup, both vehicles look great. The X definitely feels bigger while driving than my suburban did, there is a little more body role, this is partly due to the fact the X sits higher but it’s something you will definitely notice. The V10 engine is great, whisper quiet and good power, although I wish I had the 4.30 gear set in mine (currently have the 3.73). Coming from a diesel however the V10 will not feel as strong. Fuel mileage is not the greatest, I average between 12-16 MPG, but thats not why you’re buying a vehicle like this so I don’t think it’s even a consideration.<o></o>

<o></o>

Now on to the issues I have had with my X. If you haven’t already done so do a search in the Excursion forum of this site on wandering issues, I wish I had done this before I purchased mine so I knew what I was getting into. Not all seem to have this problem but it is a well known issue that the 4x4 X's tend to have a wandering feel while driving; this is partly due to the fact Ford built this vehicle for "Soccer Moms" and put less than adequate leaf springs on the vehicle. Fortunately there are some very educated people on this site in regard to this problem to help new X owners. Through the help of these people I ended up buying new "E" range tires (the previous owner put "C" range tires on it), new Bilstien shocks and a Roadmaster Active Suspension (RAS) (http://www.activesuspension.com/) which all together seem to have fixed the wandering problems. With finding some good deals on eBay and other internet sites these upgrades excluding tires cost be about $400.00.<o></o>

<o></o>

I bought the vehicle to haul my family, friends and boat to the River during the summer time. I haven’t taken my first towing trip yet as summer has not yet arrived but am curious to see how the X will tow and haul all my gear during my family outings.<o></o>

<o></o>

Hope this info helps.<o></o>

If your lookin for a gas motor, the v-10 is a very good and reliable engine. I have only had 1 problem with my v-10 and i have 125k. The problem was at 75k.

We have both a F350 with 7.3 and ex with 6.0L diesels. IMO if you are going to be towing I would much rather have a diesel, yes fuel is more but its worth it with the added power. If you do decide to go with a diesel do some research on both the 7.3 and 6.0L. My ex has the 6.0L and it is quick. Our F350 has the 7.3 not as quick but it is a much more reliable motor and many people get 250k+ miles out of them. Ive only had one problem with the 6.0L and that was head gaskets blew but that is one major thing to know about the 6.0L if you push them to hard they might blow. I put the after market stud kit and haven't had any problems yet and most likely wont.

Our 7.3 has never had any problems yet its an 00 and is 4 years older than my X but has under half the miles my ex has. I personally prefer the 6.0L if your not going to do any performance upgrades like after market turbo, etc. But if you want to build a truck with a little performance the 7.3 is more reliable.

Our Silverado hasn't been the most reliable truck. Frankly it's been a bit of a lemon. (injector problems, leaking transfer case seals, seats that ripped at the seams, overhead console fell off....) I had thought about looking at a 3/4 suburban, but I'm a little gun shy because of the problems we've had. To make it more furstrating, my father in law has the same truck, driven the same way and has had zero problems. I don't think it's just me either because all my other vehicles are fine. I know S!@* happens with all brands, but I'm not real motivated running back to the brand that just S*%# on me.

I know the diesel is prefered for towing. My preference also, but we do more than tow and my wife isn't that wild on the noise or smell of a diesel. As a plus we have the v10 in a motorhome we own and it has been a problem free motor.

How close is the excursion to the pickups? I've logged a few miles in an 02 F250 with the v10 and an 04 diesel f350. I agree the ride is worse without the IFS, but it's not too bad. Both trucks were crew cab short boxes.

Thanks again

Gord

It rides about the same as our F350 but alittle softer. My shocks need replacing so ill have to wait till then to have the real feel of the ride quality.

The only diff between the x and the superduty is the ride quality and parts of the frame.

I have an 02 X with the 7.3 diesel. In some ways I wish I would have gone with the V10. The 7.3 is a great motor, don't get me wrong, it is the noise factor in the winter that I have a tough time with. In the warmer months the 7.3 is not that loud. I cant even hear it on the highway. But in the winter at 7am and it is 30 outside, get ready for a racket. I had an 06 F250 with the 6.0 diesel and it was not much quieter than the 7.3. I have plugged in the block heater all night and it helps a bit but not much. The cost of maintenance is a bit higher also with a 15qt oil change and 10k fuel filter service. So if your wife has issues with the noise then the V10 may be the way to go. There are also some great deals on V10s out there vs diesel. Good luck with your choice.
