05 silverado to a 05 excursion
We're also thinking about going gas, right now gas is cheaper than diesel by quite a bit and I can't see the mileage difference making up for it.
I also assume ride/handling/parking are all going to be about the same.
Any input would be appreciated.
Thanks
Gord

>The X doesn't ride as well as my suburban did, this is probably due to the fact that the Chevy had IFS. This is not to say the ride is bad in the X it’s just that the suburban was a little more civilized. I have ridden in the same model truck you have, which was very comparable to my suburban, so I think you will find the same experience I did. Interior and exterior is all a matter of opinion, since I have owned Chevys for the last 6 years I am partial to their interior although I think the leather quality in the X is better than that of my Suburban. IMO exterior looks is a tossup, both vehicles look great. The X definitely feels bigger while driving than my suburban did, there is a little more body role, this is partly due to the fact the X sits higher but it’s something you will definitely notice. The V10 engine is great, whisper quiet and good power, although I wish I had the 4.30 gear set in mine (currently have the 3.73). Coming from a diesel however the V10 will not feel as strong. Fuel mileage is not the greatest, I average between 12-16 MPG, but thats not why you’re buying a vehicle like this so I don’t think it’s even a consideration.<o

>Now on to the issues I have had with my X. If you haven’t already done so do a search in the Excursion forum of this site on wandering issues, I wish I had done this before I purchased mine so I knew what I was getting into. Not all seem to have this problem but it is a well known issue that the 4x4 X's tend to have a wandering feel while driving; this is partly due to the fact Ford built this vehicle for "Soccer Moms" and put less than adequate leaf springs on the vehicle. Fortunately there are some very educated people on this site in regard to this problem to help new X owners. Through the help of these people I ended up buying new "E" range tires (the previous owner put "C" range tires on it), new Bilstien shocks and a Roadmaster Active Suspension (RAS) (http://www.activesuspension.com/) which all together seem to have fixed the wandering problems. With finding some good deals on eBay and other internet sites these upgrades excluding tires cost be about $400.00.<o

>I bought the vehicle to haul my family, friends and boat to the River during the summer time. I haven’t taken my first towing trip yet as summer has not yet arrived but am curious to see how the X will tow and haul all my gear during my family outings.<o

Our 7.3 has never had any problems yet its an 00 and is 4 years older than my X but has under half the miles my ex has. I personally prefer the 6.0L if your not going to do any performance upgrades like after market turbo, etc. But if you want to build a truck with a little performance the 7.3 is more reliable.
I know the diesel is prefered for towing. My preference also, but we do more than tow and my wife isn't that wild on the noise or smell of a diesel. As a plus we have the v10 in a motorhome we own and it has been a problem free motor.
How close is the excursion to the pickups? I've logged a few miles in an 02 F250 with the v10 and an 04 diesel f350. I agree the ride is worse without the IFS, but it's not too bad. Both trucks were crew cab short boxes.
Thanks again

I have an 02 X with the 7.3 diesel. In some ways I wish I would have gone with the V10. The 7.3 is a great motor, don't get me wrong, it is the noise factor in the winter that I have a tough time with. In the warmer months the 7.3 is not that loud. I cant even hear it on the highway. But in the winter at 7am and it is 30 outside, get ready for a racket. I had an 06 F250 with the 6.0 diesel and it was not much quieter than the 7.3. I have plugged in the block heater all night and it helps a bit but not much. The cost of maintenance is a bit higher also with a 15qt oil change and 10k fuel filter service. So if your wife has issues with the noise then the V10 may be the way to go. There are also some great deals on V10s out there vs diesel. Good luck with your choice.
