Ive been Doing some thinking about makeing my Own Free Flowing Air Filter Setup Useing 2 K&N Filters that are made for a Polaris SP500HO.. The Throttle, Where the Air Flow tubes Leading to the Filter itself... They look to be appx 2" So i take a 2" Pipe Con-X which is just a 2" Rubber Sleve with Hose Clamps on each End, Put them on the Throttle Body and Running the Filters off of there.
It would be Running one Filter on each Inlet for good Flow and wont cost over $80 For EVERYTHING needed to do this includeing the Filters.
So is this a Dumb idea? Sounds like it will work but you guys know more than I do. Or Hows this, Since its a Street truck cant i just take off the Filter and keep all the Tubeing? The engine has 190k so im not worried about getting alittle Dust in there.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 04-Nov-02 AT 04:45 PM (EST)]there would definately be no air restriction... but there would be alot of air turbulance(if your putting the filters directly on the tb) which is no good if you are trying to build hp. you need the tubes to smooth out the air that is going into the engine. i had an 87 f-150 5.0 and I cut off the bottom of the air box on the side closest to the fender(away from eng. heat)((dont cut the side completely off to where it wont clamp the filter!!)) and removed the spring looking things inside of the piping(designed to keep the air tubes from collapsing incase you havent changed your filter in the last million or so miles) and installed a k&n... seemed to work great - best of all it only cost $35, and the air is fully filtered with little to no restriction. just my .02 -good luck-
I thought of doing the same thing on my 86F250 5.0 and had the same question. Would there be any problems i would have or is this just a great way of cheap horsepower?

Take a look in my gallery - I built my own free flow intake
using stock parts for a lot less than that...
Seems to work pretty well...
I bought my 93 with the filter box already removed and a k&n in place of the factory filter. It was not the factory style filter, but one of the universal filters that they make. it has two round fitting the same size as the TB tubes so you just have to get two pieces of pipe to go between the two. then make a little bracket and mount the metal end of the filter to the wall of the engine compartment. low restriction with smooth flow and cool looks. the filter is conical shaped, but flat so the two tubes are side by side. if you go to their website you will see which one i mean. good luck,
Travis
