im completly lost, my 86 has a 208 case and every now and then 4wd wont enguage. i pull it into 4wheel high or low and the front drive shaft just spins free. it has happend twice once about a year ago and once about a month ago. both times it lasted for a while where i wouldent have 4wheel drive. it started working again yesterday. it just happend not to work when i had my rear end high centerd on a muddy road. i just want to know how a manual shift transfer case can decide to work and then not to work.

Sounds like the linkage is sticking internally. There is a big splined hub that slides onto another hub to engage the front shaft. It might not be sliding. Heres a full set of pictures of the inside of a NP208. I still have the broken case if you want more pics.
i can feel every thing moving freely though, the lever moves fine, its just not enguageing the front drive shaft, i had 2hi 2hi N 2low. unless the splined hub is spring loaded in some way and is stuck, but the way i see it is like a shift fork in a manual tranny it is either going to go in or the lever isn't going to move. my hubs and front end are fine so i know it aint in there becuase i can spin the drive shaft freely when it is supposed to be in 4 wheel
