Highboy Fuel Tank

YES.....Another highboy thread.

So, I finally placed an order for a fuel tank from Aerotanks.com for a 32 gal tank that is supposed to fit the narrow frame rail. I can't believe no other company makes a tank to fit. I know one other FTE member had one made through Fatfendered.com, but it was only 17 gal. And others have made other small tanks work. Mine is going to be a gas-hog or rather an Ethanol-hog. So, I need a bigger tank. . Anyway, it was pretty spendy. $410 for the tank which includes the sending unit, mounting bolts, new fuel hose, etc. But I think the shipping rates increased. It is now $130 to ship UPS from CA to MN. ARRRRGGHHHH. SHIPPING!!!! I hope the tank is worth it. I have talked with different welding companies about custom making me a tank, and everyone seems to not be interested or had quoted me about the same prices as me just getting this one. Well, I should have the tank in a couple of weeks and I'll post pics and what not.

I'm doing a very similar resto/mod as you are (mine is a "76 F250). And, will be dealing with the same issue. I have a cab tank now, planning to eliminate completely and move tank under bed between frame. I was going to use a used marine aluminum tank,(fairly cheap) rectangular or square shape to fit between frame rails and put filler door in the flat area fore or aft of the drivers side wheel well or in the sloped inside portion of the stock filler door at rear of bed. I suppose you could fab a neck to use the stock filler door too.

BTW thanks for the pics in gallery of your steering box fab work. I just picked up a used D60 and a 4 bolt steering box to upgrade my low pinion D44 and power assist steering.

I probably shouldn't even started this thread, but I figured I would so I could post pics later on after I've received the tank just to show what it looks like for others to see. AFAIK, this tank I ordered is the largest capacity and made specifically to fit around the rear crossmember and between the frame rails.

OK....I finally received my tank. For the kind of money spent, you would think you wouldn't have any problems, but there is one (right now for sure). The fit seems to be fine and will bolt right up the the frame rails (a little shimming of course), but the darn filler neck is at the wrong angle or spot if you will. I read some other threads about having this problem. I am going to email aerotanks back with these pictures and hope they will take the time and redesign the filler neck. I guess I'm going to have to do some modification.

Wow that thing is HUGE. Looks great though, minus the filler spout...

ya, it's 32 gal. It would be almost perfect if the filler neck was at the right angle. I'm going to try and grind down the welds on it and see if I can tip it back in order to clear the frame once a hose is on it. I don't want to cut the frame in that spot either. I ordered some fuel hose that has a steel wire lining to prevent collapsing if kinked a bit so we'll see what I can get to work.

I built this tank for my Crew Cab which has the same narrow frame as a 4X4. It holds a little over 44 useable gallons. Lot of work but little cash. Painted the outside with bed liner and coated the inside with gas tank sloshing sealer. Works great so far.

That looks good Hornet.......

Well, here is some progress so far. I don't have my fuel hose yet, so I'm waiting to see how much more I have to do. But, I have gained some clearance. And I can always grind a bit off the frame also for added clearance too. I just don't want to do alot.
