O/D off Flashing -Can that alarm be disabled

Have 97 explorer.

The o/d off flashes only when it is driven at interstate speeds.

It is fine 90% of the time. But I am afraid that the transmission is going to tear itself up because it shifts so hard when in this mode.

The alarm generally, but not always goes off when you return to lower speeds.

I know you can disconnect the battery and reset, but this is my college drivers vehicle and I know he will not do this.

I want to disable this alarm function if possible....How do you do it.

Thanks,

When was the last time the transmission was serviced? You need to have the codes pulled.

Its doing that for a reason. When the O/D light is flashing and the tranny is shifting hard there is usually a mechanical problem. Clearing the code may breifly get rid of the the flashing O/D light but not for long, it will keep coming back.

Have the codes pulled, preferably at a transmission shop because I will bet dollars to pesos you have a problem with your tranny whether mechanical or electrical.

Don't wait too long or the problem will get worse and you might get stuck somewhere. O/D light = "limp" mode and usually indicates a problem.
