Hey guys,I have a 95 explorer and the overdrive light is blinking and it seems to be shifting pretty hard.I beleive it happend once before. You guys have a great site and hope somebody may have a idea. Thanks alot and make it a great day!
O/D light blinking is NOT a good sign. You can take it to AutoZone and have them run the codes for you.
The same thing happened to me, it went off after a recycle start, but then the service engine soon light came and stayed on. I took mine to a local tranny shop who ran the codes for free.
First time it was the transfer case. About 600 miles later the same thing happened...this time it was gear 5 that came up on the code.
T/C $2600 (that included front passanger wheel barrings replaced too)
Tranny fix (estimated to be) $2400-2800 (they are replacing the fuel filter for free - price quoted before I asked them how much that would be additional since they had it in)
roughly $5200 additional to a truck I paid $6800 for.
Sounds like your tranny is toast. Same problem with my sisters 95' Sport. It needed a new tranny. I took it to a local transmission shop for her and got a rebuilt tranny with shift kit and updates, new converter installed for under $1600 with a 2 year warrenty. She is now on her third tranny at 160k, the previuos ford reman lasted 100k.
Don't go to a Ford dealer, they will just throw a reman in and done. Try to find a good reputable transmission shop to look at you explorer.

WOW $1600?! Thats a great deal! I think the parts for that year are a little cheaper then my 02 though.
The OD light on my 95 starts blinking about once a year. I always pull the codes which reveal nothing and then I reset the light. Then it's good for another year. Be aware that when the light is blinking, the trans goes into 'limp' mode resulting in hard shifting. It's not good to drive it like that any significant distance. I carry a code reader in the truck so if the light comes on, I can reset it in a matter of minutes. Also, disconnecting the battery for 10 minutes will also reset the codes. This is a lot easier that spending 2k for a rebuild. I've heard of people getting the rebuilds only to have the light come back on in a couple of weeks.
Yes, limp/cripple mode was Fords way of letting the driver know that the vehicle is experiencing OD related problems. The idea was that they could 'limp' it into the nearest repair shop.
