I sure could use some information. I decided tonight that I would like to have and drive a truck like my grandpa had. I found a 1962 Ford Stepside in the Phoenix Craigslist. The guy can't seem to sell it for the life of him. Could someone take a look at the ad for me and tell me what is wrong with the truck? Why isn't it desireable? Is it the price? The restore job? Thanks for any help. Phoenix Craigslist # 616910545

Information overload for one thing, you don't buy a truck over someones back and bills, don't know what a center head is either.

While not out of line it is a little pricey for that year truck and will take a little longer to sell. IMHO

Welcome to (FTE)!

The 62 looks real nice in those pics, even though its raining!

I would check it out real good, as far as the back injury, and the bills he does
need the money or he would not be wanting to sell, it is a way to move on to
other things! You also may want to see what type of brakes, I did notice the
plastic master cylinder in the picture!

P.s as for the term " center head " maybe he means ,cylinder heads? Or he
could mean, center chunk, center hogs head, over head center console?
Just some guesses!

More info from owner

" Thanks for the interest . This is a real nice straight little truck and I don't know for the life of me why it hasn't sold . THE ECONOMY I GUESS . I have spent over 8 grand on her getting her to where she is now . Lots of tire kickers that want it for nothing . I have put too much time and money into her to just let it go like that

The truck is not totally original . The motor is the same block ,but bored out to a 302 with a rv cam , new center head with 4 barrell carb . Lots of crome , new starter, new fuel pump , new 4 core radiator , new electric fans , new a/c with the interior fans & control is in the center console between the bucket seats , new power steering ( ram not installed ) new power brakes ( all parts new ) tilt steering , new carpet & head liner , floor shift , c-4 automatic transmission ( motor & tranny have less than 2000 miles since rebuilt ) new gages & tachometer, new am/fm/cd/ stereo with power antanna , aluminum checker plate bedliner, roll pan installed on the rear to replace the back bumper with rear nice l.e.d. lights installed , reese tow package installed behind the flip up licience plate . All of this sits on new tires & nice centerline wheels . the truck is presently in brown primer and needs minor body work and a nice paint job . This truck has great lines for 2 - toning .
Susan , I injured my back while installing the power steering and thats why the ram isn,t installed ( no big deal , about a 2 hour job & all parts are there ) and thats why the truck hasn't been finished . Now I find myself in a position where the doctors want paid and without working for a while , guess what has to go .
Basically all the truck needs other than body & paint is the ram installed and the windshield repaired . Everything else has been rebuilt . If you so decide to buy this truck your going to get one hell of a deal . The truck never needs emmissions and will never go down in value . With a nice paint job the Kelly Blue Book for that truck is between 15 & 23 grand ."

Any more thoughts about this truck?

Eight Grand in what? and a standard cab flair side will never bring 23 grand in any condition.... including the condition it is in. Not event with the idiots at BJ.....It is not a rare one of a kind.....

Here in phoenix and most of arizona it is a 1500 dollar max truck....What worries me is why the fresh red primer...somethings hiding... just like the 1500 dollar uni that was on, nice fresh red primer sprayed right over the rusticles... looks real good in the pictures but up close its a 200 dollar parts truck.....I looked at it at the Glendale Swap and walked away.

If you are in Phoenix i can look the truck over with you and give you a accurate assessment of its worth.

I have heard a lot of northern folks refer to the intake as a center head
they also called a bell pepper a mango

Thanks Garbz, just what I wanted to hear. I really don't want a fancyed up truck anyway, just a '61' or so that runs pretty good and isn't too hard on the eyes.

I know they were not available in trucks for several more years, but was there a 302 in 62 or was it still a 289?

Yeah, the original block bored to 302.....not sure about all that. That engine family wasn't available in that 62 pickup. I don't think that engine family was around in 62 was it? But he could have bought it that way, and thought the motor was original. That doens't look like a bad pickup. he may have put it in primer to just have an even coat of some sort of color on the truck. that is what my wife and I did with hers...just wanted a color on it that looked like someone meant it to be...

Truck would have either a 223 six or a 292.. I may just call this guy and see the truck in person on sunday.

I once stopped in between scranton and wellsboro and place a card in a decent looking F250 Camper special, typical PA truck... Recieved a call a few weeks later from the owner wanting 14 K for it...... He had just watched the BJ express on speed the week before....I laughed and told him good luck....But they will give me eight grand... I told him go take thier money and run.. fast....

Shoot me an PM and i will look around for you.. not all of the good stuff is on craigs list.

thats the trueth... i was looking on craigs list for months for a good truck that i could injoy for a while before... and found one truck that i liked. and that i would injoy.

just one little drive threw town, and found a really nice truck.

btw, theres a 66 here in washington, the body and everything is nice, i saw it driving around, and didnt sound to bad. i think the guy wanted 3000 on it. but i dont know to much about it. didnt bother to look at it simply cause weve got enough cars around the house.

Thanks Garbz,
I can't send pm's yet, too new. That truck is also on E Bay and I saw it elsewhere listed for sale last April or May. He wasn't claiming medical bills at that time.

I would like to find either a 60's or even a 70's stepside that is in original condition. Doesn't need to look new or even close. Just be a sound truck.

Thanks,
Susan
