I noticed on mine that I was trying to use the wrong timing mark. You might double check, the correct one is a little hard to see. Is it possibly 180 out?
cfrives3 is correct. The deep line running the width of the balancer is for a magnetic tach pickup. Do yourself a favor and get a white out pen and look carefully for the 0 degree line on the balancer and color it in with white out.
I also had timing troubles with the I6 in my 85. It seemed so different than any other car/truck I had hooked a timing light to before.
The other guys are right. The TDC mark on the fly wheel is hard to find. I needed a strong light, a wire brush, brake cleaner and even a piece of sand paper! That little nick was buried under layers of grease and old oil! The white-out works great. Easy to apply and dries fast.
The timing marks are not where you might expect on the drivers side of the engine. There is a marker there but look on the PASSENGER side of the motor! That's the bugger to use. A bit more of the brake cleaner and you can even see the degree numbers. Put another spot of the white-out at 10 degrees.
Dont forget to have the motor good and warmed up and disconnect the SPOUT connection at the dizzy.
That's what I thought. I just went through a nightmare swapping mine over to Duraspark, it's still all fresh in my mind, which is why I weighed in on this particular prob. Did you get it right yet?
