I have a 1993 ford f150 with a 4.9 straight six. It seems as if it has a slight exhaust leak. The leak isn't big enough to notice all the time but I can notice it under heavy acceleration and going up hills. The leak is also loud enough to make it uncomfortable in the cab noise wise at times. I have looked all over and can't seem to find where the leak is coming from. Any ideas?
What area of the truck does the noise seem to be coming from? Have you stuck your head out the window to listen when it is making the noise or had a passenger do the same?
Check the manifold and where the manifold meets the tailpipe. Don't let it go. Mine was slightly leaking there and after I towed my camper it melted my heater box costing me $1,000.00 to have it fixed not including the exhaust leak. I have a F250 with a 351ci.
So around the area of your catalytic converter? Have you inspected all of your exhaust tubing, welds, joints and the like? Is it louder when your engine is cold?
I'm going to second for you to check for leaks where the exhaust bolts up to the exhaust manifolds. You should also check your exhaust manifolds for cracks.
I found that there is a tube that runs from the engine down to the catalytic converter and it has rusted off from the cat. Idk if this could cause the noise i am hearing or not.
I'm not aware of an easy fix for that. Perhaps somebody else has repaired this type of damage before and can chime in. Unfortunately, it sounds like you'll need to consider replacing or eliminating your cat. It would be best for the environment and emmisions inspections and other legal ramifications if you replaced it. Unless you can reuse the air tube going into the cat, you'll probably have to replace it as well.
