I usually grab the 1/4" air ratchet first, then work my way up as necessary. Bigger usually isn't necessary until I reach the head bolts.

If they are tough with a ratchet, an air tool will probably break them. If the air tool struggles, I usually back off to more "civilized" means and finesse the fastener out.

I got 1/2, 3/8 air ratchets, had Snap-On 3/8 & 1/2 Battery impacts (someone stole them with about $5000.00 more and Portland PD did nothing) and got 2 IR 1/2 impacts. I used the battery ones when there was a lot because they made it easier but wouldn't last long when you started doing real work. I use the impacts for high torque and the air ratchets when there's a bunch of them. 32 3/8 bolts on a compressor cover on one end and the same in 1/2 on the other they make life so much easier.
