302 build up question

I am putting together a 302 with the edelbrock performer RPM,( 290, 300 duration, 496, 520 lift). First question, do you need aftermarket pistons with valve reliefs with this much cam? Has anybody used this cam, like it, recomend something else. The bottom end of my motor is stock, except 30 over. My goal is have around 400 hp, A guy I know recomended the edelbrock rpm package. I am open to suggestions for a possibly cheaper or more effective way to reach my goal.

Mike

ps, it is going into my 69 mustang. I want to 12 second ets.

Personally, I wouldn't take anyone's word if the cam cleared the pistons; replace the stock valve springs from one cylinder with a set of light tension springs and roll the engine to TDC on that cylinder and measure how much valve travel you have by simply pushing the valve down with your fingers. This way you'll know exactly how much room you have to work with. The Edelbrock Performer RPM package, while good, isn't going to give you 400hp though, especially with stock heads.

I agree with Quantrex, not even close to 400 HP with that setup. It will take a highly modified and expensive 302 to get into 400HP and the 12s ETs. If you want to stay with a smallblock, A 351 would be an easier starting point. Even with a 351, I think you will need some good heads. You are on the right track to a great running engine by using a factory designed package IMHO.

And to go even further, I do not see the engine even reaching 300hp, yes, the stock heads are that bad....

302 build up question

A more effective, not to mention more durable, way to get your Mustang into the 12's would be to contact Crite's and get their swap parts to install a 460 and C6. You'll need the 390/428 radiator and front coil springs plus a 9" or late 8.8" rear axle with a set of 3.50-3.73:1 gears. Install subframe connectors. Build the 460 for a very mild 425-450hp (can be done with ported stock heads with CJ valves and the Edelbrock Performer RPM package). Inside the C6 you'll want TCI's 2.72:1 planetary gear and hd bands and clutches.
This may sound like a lot but it probably won't be much more than building a 400hp 302 and you'll need to beef up the chassis and upgrade the drivetrain for reliability at that horsepower level.
