i was recently given a 1979 f150 but it won't start. when you try to crank it it sqweels like the starter isn't engageing correctly is there a way to tell if the starter is bad or if the ring gear on the flywheel is the cause. my brother in law says it needs a ring gear but before i pull the tranny i would like too really check it out
there is a way to hook up to put power to the starter to bypass the fender mounted solenoid plus I would pull the starter and hook it to a battery plus while it is out I would bar over the engine and look at the ring gear.
i was thinking about cranking the engine by hand but i don't know how worn the ring gear can be an still work ok. I would think that a 30 year old trucks ring gear might have some worn spots.

IMO pull off the startor. if the teeth are worn get a news startor. if it still grinds with the new starter get a new flexplate/flywheel ring gear.
but if i this happend to me all over again. i would have replaced both at the same time. it got pretty old getting out of hte truck to turn the motor over by hand to find a "good" spot on the ring gear for it to turn over.
just my 2 cents.
